Time, Details, and Being Bent

March 17, 2008 by Liz

I've been thinking . . .

being bent.

I know a few things about myself . . . I know that I’m not always such “a prize.” When time — a true sense of urgency enters in and details begin to pile up — I get focused on answers and moving things forward. It’s at those times, I try to be extra nice, because I don’t want to be. What I want to is get things done.

It works something like this . . . I focus on the tasks at hand, but people who know me, aren’t used that. So they expect me to be my usual laid-back self. When I call and ask for a few minutes, they say how busy they are. I get confused. I say I only need a five-minute answer. I hear their whole schedule.

I feel put in a box — made less — by people who don’t have time and don’t remember that I always have time for them.

Right now with SOBCon, I have many things to handle all lined out and organized. I only have exactly enough time and bandwidth to get it all done. Some folks started to help then faded away. I know we all can’t give a lot.

The irony is that ones who don’t have time for a quick question are the ones I’ve helped the most. So I’m doing something wrong, because I would hope they would know me the best.

Have I talked too much at them? Have I not have been respectful of their time in the past?

I’d sure love to know what you see. Straighten me out. Would you? I’m obviously bent.

Know What You Do Well, Get More Business, Have More Fun!

March 13, 2008 by Liz

Head, Heart, Purpose in One Direction

Personal Identity logo

One of the best parts of this SxSW conference was going into it fully aware of what I do well — my value proposition. The “what do you do?” question wasn’t hanging over my head when I met someone new. I could just talk in the same I talk to friends.

Every “hello” allowed me a chance to find about the person before me. I got to hear about their life and ask about their goals. An event like SxSW offers so many people who are doing exciting things. When it came time to speak of what I do — rather than flail for something sensible to say — I could relate what I do to what I had just heard.

How fun is that?!!

I noticed that the folks at the parties who know what they do well are the ones who have the engaging conversation. I also noticed that folks who want to work with me need to know what I do so that they can.

If you don’t know what you do well, start now to figure it out.

  • Look over your past successes.
  • See what they have in common.
  • Make a list of 3-5 traits or skills that define your best work.
  • Write a sentence that explains how those 3-5 traits come together.
  • Learn it by heart

Want an example? Mine is in the sidebar under the button that says, “Work with Liz!”

In order to work with you, I have to know, What do you do well?

Seize the Day by Letting Go!

March 11, 2008 by Liz

Even the Humblest Star Still Shines

Just a few words, a reminder, that we’re all meant to be brilliant.

Shine!

I open my hand. The stress is gone. My hand is free to touch, to move, to help a friend who needs me, to type these words to you. So many things that I can feel and understand when my heart is open too.

Letting go is hope. It is belief, and aspiration. It becomes reaching for a dream. It has passion for a noble vision. Letting go can open eyes; it can open minds; it can open hearts to understanding.

We cannot hold our hand closed when we are reaching.

Even with our best effort and imaginings, we have no control over many things that happen around us. (Maybe we could, but I’ve yet to meet anyone who’s quite that evolved.) We have total control over how we respond to all of that input. It’s in that response that our motivation most counts. Here’s what I mean.

Pretty Is . . . Do You Make Assumptions?

You Sure Have It Easy

What’s pretty? Do you make assumptions? Do you think you don’t? Listen in. This video stayed with me.

Not Pretty Really

People are people. customers, bosses, parents, kids, strangers, store clerks, taxi drivers . . . super models.

It’s important that we don’t forget.

Be Awe Inspired Today!

The world is majestic. How can we live here and ignore it? We only have to look a few seconds and we’re wired to be moved by it. It’s our home. It changes us to stop to recognize it. We’re filled up with what we need.

Be awe-inspired. Then show another person how to be.
