Is Your Small Business Firing on All Cylinders?

October 10, 2018 by Thomas Leave a Comment

In running a small business, is it firing on all cylinders?

For some small business owners, they are missing out on one or more key facets of success. As such, it can leave their companies in peril if they do not tend to the matter sooner than later.

With that in mind, are you taking the steps to make sure your business operates at its greatest potential?

How Are Your Finances Going?

One key to piecing together a successful brand is making sure your money situation is good.

That said you want to do all you can to be sure you have the funds to keep things running as smoothly as possible.

So, when was the last time you sat down to look at your financial books?

In the event you are having trouble making ends meet, it may be time to consider small business loans.

Should you decide to consider a small business loan, where best to start?

For starters, know which loan providers are most worth your time.

One of the ways to go about doing this is by going online. Once on the Internet, you can research to see which loan providers would have your best interests in mind.

If you’re friends with some other business owners, ask them who they went to when they were considering a loan. The feedback you get from your friends in the small business world can prove quite fruitful.

Once you have a small loan provider you think you can work with, determine how much of a loan you in fact will be seeking.

Also take into account what the loan will be geared towards.

Among some of the reasons you would be seeking a small business loan:

  • Financial capital to grow your business
  • Money to pay down debts
  • Added funds to buy office equipment
  • Taking on more inventory

No matter the reason you could be seeking to take out a loan, be sure to do your homework. When you research different loan providers and why you need a loan, there’s less chance of making a bad decision.

Staying Up to Date on Employees and Technology

As important as a loan can be for you make it a point to not overlook the importance of employees and technology.

When it comes to your employees, do you do all you can to go about hiring the best out there?

Although you may make a mistake or two in hiring at times, you do not want to make it the norm. Too many bad hires can lead to a revolving door at your company. In the event you have investors, they do not want to see too much turnover. The wrong hires can also lead to issues as far as employee morale.

As it relates to technology, do your best to have the latest tech available to you and your employees.

Keep in mind that there are many savvy consumers out there. As such, they expect you to be a leader and not a follower in technology and the customer experience.

In doing all you can to make your business fire on all cylinders, are you coming out ahead?

4 Ways the Public Library Can Support Your Small Business

May 27, 2018 by Jane Boyd 2 Comments

A few days ago I went to the library. You know — one of my local public libraries. I went there to borrow some books that I had placed a hold on. For research. As in — business research. That’s right. I went to the local library to borrow books to support research I was doing for a client project.

As an entrepreneur, I’ve come to realize that the public library system is actually a great resource for my small business. Over the years, I’ve used library services across the Metro Vancouver area for a multitude of business reasons. Here’s 4 ways I have found that local public libraries support small business:

  • They often provide great access to affordable meeting spaces for small (or large) group gatherings.
  • There’s usually quiet (in some cases — virtually silent) and comfortable areas to read, work or conduct research.
  • Most libraries provide free access to good quality,  wireless high-speed internet. This can be especially handy when I’m traveling and don’t want to spend a ton of  time working in noisy coffee shops.
  • And, most importantly, there are all the books and resources that libraries have to offer. Over the last while, I’ve found myself ordering more and more physical books to read and review for various client projects, for business research and for general planning purposes. Of course, many libraries also offer e-book borrowing as well. All in all — libraries are a super affordable way to access a huge range of resources, reading materials and reference items.

So, as you can see there are lots of ways that the local library system plays a role in supporting the work I do through my small business here in Canada.

As an entrepreneur, I’m just one of the many different types of people that public libraries serve. In reality, today’s libraries are busy offering programs and services to an absolute multitude of people! For example, on any given day 50,000 people come through the doors of the Toronto (Canada) Public Library’s 100 branches, while 85,000 make an online visit.  And — just in case you thought Starbucks had cornered the market on access to free high-speed internet in the United States, think again. According to American Library Association there are more public libraries than Starbucks in the U.S.—a total of 17,566 including branches. Nearly 100% of public libraries provide Wi-Fi and have no-fee access to computers. Plus, many libraries have local coffee shops located very close to them. Some libraries even sell coffee right inside the library.

Isn’t that amazing? Wow.

With respect to business and careers, I came across this other bit of interesting information from the American Library Association. Did you know that libraries actually strengthen local economies? For example in the U.S. –

  • 73% of public libraries assist patrons with job applications and interviewing skills;
  • 68% help patrons use databases to find career openings;
  • 48% provide access to and assist entrepreneurs with online business information resources;
  • More than 36% offer work space for mobile workers.

And while we almost all turn to Google Search for the answers to a great many things, the reality is that many people also still relay on reference librarians in the public and academic libraries across the U.S. Did you know that collectively reference librarians answer nearly 6.6 million questions weekly in the nations libraries!

That’s another wow!

Here’s a few super helpful library websites that have been developed to support small business owners.

The Berkley Public Library offers a comprehensive listing of resources, events and research links to support small business as well as jobs and career planning.

The New York Public Library provides a great Small Business Resource Center that is packed with local, state and national links and information.

The Vancouver Public Library offers a super listing of recommended books for entrepreneurs to read as well as links to many different websites to help small business owners with planning, operations and much more.

So — the next time you are in need of some support for your small business, you need to do some research for the development of a new product or are trying to find the answer to that impossible business question — head to your local library. You might just be amazed by how much your local library has to offer! If you need help finding the public library service in your community check out this great listing of libraries around the world.

What Makes Your Business Stand Out from the Rest?

January 24, 2018 by Thomas Leave a Comment

As you take a moment to reflect on the success of your business, what has made it achieve greatness up to this point?

Some business owners will state that it is the employees that make the company tick.

Others will also point out that they could not be doing this well if not for a great marketing plan being in place.

Still others would highlight they learned from their mistakes. As such, they improved business operations over time.

No matter what makes your business stand out from the rest, always strive to make your company better.

Remember, standing still can be a recipe for disaster.

Does Your Workplace Run as Smooth as It Can?

In having a smooth running workplace to stand out from others, remember the following:

  1. Employees – Hiring top-of-the-line employees gives you a competitive advantage over your competitors. That said there may be times when employee issues come to the surface (see more below). If they do, will you handle them the best way possible? In having the best human resources solutions, you can more times than not avert problems. With that in mind, be sure when hiring anyone that they know full well what you expect of them. You don’t want a workplace where rules are not followed and mayhem is the order of the day.
  2. Meetings – Yes, there are employees and even bosses who dread regular company meetings. The same is true for one-on-one meetings between an employee and his or her supervisor. Even with that in mind, meetings are productive on several fronts. They allow you and your team to chart a business course each week. You can also hash out any issues that are within the framework of everyone can know about the situation. For example, one or more clients are being difficult when it comes to renewing contracts with you. By sitting down as a team, your employees share ideas on how best to keep those clients on-board for the future. Among those issues to deal with on a more personal level would be some workers not getting along with one another.
  3. Personalities – While you are not running a dating service, you do expect your co-workers to at least be cordial with one another. Running a company also means being a part-time psychologist. Doing your best to know office personalities and which ones need a little more attention is key. With human resources consultants along for the ride, you are better set to receive H.R. advice to take to the bank. Such consultants can also remind you how to go about staying within the framework of your legal responsibilities in running a business.
  4. Goals – Last; always be thinking about what tomorrow may bring. One of your goals as a business owner is to have a plan in place not only for today, but also tomorrow and beyond. If you end up becoming complacent, it can backfire on you. In fact, it could one day lead to your business closing its doors. Always keep an eye on what competitors are doing and how you can surpass them.

In having your brand at the top of the heap, strive hard to be the most resourceful business owner possible.

Run Your Small Business without Interruptions

July 21, 2017 by Thomas Leave a Comment

call-15758_640In running your small business operation, you have a lot on your plate. That said the last thing you want to deal with on an on-going basis is interruptions.

While some of those interruptions are all but unavoidable, others are preventable.

Take for instance when you are being bombarded with phone calls on a daily basis. Yes, many of those can be customer calls ranging from questions to comments on your brand. Others, meantime, can be nothing short of a nuisance.

If you’re wondering how to find out who’s calling you on a regular basis, it is actually easier than you may think.

There are services out there that allow you to track down where the call is coming from. In doing so, you can determine if it is worthy of your time or not.

In the event you continue to receive calls from the same number or numbers, you can end up blocking them. By doing so, you remove one more obstacle to avoiding daily interruptions

Calls Are Not the Only Issue

While unwanted phone calls can put a crimp in your daily plans, they are not the only issue you must deal with.

Whether in business for years or getting started in the small business world, keep it moving.

Among some of the interruptions to best try and avoid:

  • Email overload – Have you ever stopped to count how many emails fill your inbox on a daily basis? If you did, there’s a good chance you would be quite surprised by the volume. It is best when you have some down time to go through and sort those that you need to receive on a regular basis.
  • Customers coming in – In a business where customers come in on a regular basis, you have a fine line to balance. On one hand, you want to make sure customers feel welcome when they enter your business. On the other side, you can’t afford to have disruptions that keep you from doing your duties as head of the business. Make sure you find that happy medium.
  • Employee distractions – Though you don’t want to babysit, some workers need more direction. In such cases, stress to those individuals the importance of time management. It only takes one or two employees to throw off the production schedule for a small business. If this occurs, some customers may become upset that they’re not getting what they want on time.

Keeping Your Focus Too

In owning a company, you have to make sure your time management skills are exemplary for others under you.

This means making sure you delegate responsibility when necessary.

For some small business owners, they try and do everything under the sun on their own. As a result, they can end up dropping the ball more times than not.

Your best bet is to hire the right people, responsible individuals that is. When you do, you will feel better about assigning tasks that you can’t do or have time for.

Last, don’t be afraid to make mistakes.

Remember, some of the best small business leaders out there have made their share of gaffes over time. What separates them from the losers is they learned from their mistakes.

So, are you ready to become an even better small business owner today?

Are You in the Business of Apps?

February 11, 2015 by Thomas 1 Comment

apps-kids-blocks-shows-application-software-and-computing-100303643In today’s business world, it is all but a necessity to be up to speed on the latest technology.

For many small business owners, the lack of time and effort when it comes to technology can ultimately lead to missed business and lost revenue.

So, which areas of technology should you be focused on moving forward in order to build your company?

Consumers Love Apps

Living in a fast-paced world means many consumers want their products and services yesterday and not today. In order to meet such demands, business owners must utilize the best technology available, allowing them to stay a step ahead of the competition.

Among the technological devices that should be standard in today’s business world are apps.

For starters, much of that necessary technology must come from within, meaning your office and your employees need access to it in order to best serve customers.

One of the top apps that should be in your arsenal is a mobile app.

With millions of consumers sporting mobile devices, your mobile app can be a treasure trove of new and existing business.

Face it; you should be catering to a large swath of the population who can and should be using your products and/or services.

You can provide customers with a wide-range of specials (mobile coupons, deals etc.) that will likely keep them coming back to you for years. The mobile app also allows you to do business instantaneously, lessening the chances customers will go elsewhere.

Make the Workplace More Productive

Apps are also beneficial to business owners when it comes to handling a host of workplace needs from organizing data to scheduling meets.

If you are looking at companies who are tasked with developing android apps and other such tech devices, look for a provider who can offer you some of these needs:

  • File storage – Filing of company and computer data is one of the biggest tasks facing any small business. Use the right app to view and manage your PDF, Excel, Word and other such files. This will also allow you to share sizable documents in one link inside the creation of an email, thereby allowing you to skip attachments;
  • Customer invoices – Staying on top of your customers’ invoices is critical in order to keep your finances healthy. The right app allows you to neatly manage the invoices, including the all-important bills. One of the biggest challenges any business (but especially small businesses) faces is collecting payments from those individuals/companies who can be lax at following through after being billed. Delinquent accounts can end up costing the business owner time and money, both of which he or she may be short on. Make sure your app has all the numbers up to date so you can easily see which client or clients are falling behind on their financial commitment to you;
  • On-the-go – Many small business owners and/or their employees end up having to be out of the office at any given time of the day. Whether it is to make deliveries, meet with clients or attend networking events, they want to stay in touch with the workplace. This can be done via an app which will permit you to team up with your PC. You can then review any files you may need, especially if they are relevant to meeting with clients;
  • Reaching out – It is not uncommon for small business owners to need to reach out to current and potential customers with pitches, special offers and more. The right app helps you by storing details in a business letter, something you can then send off to clients. You can save a particular template and design so you do not have to repeat the process over and over again.

As you can see, apps have a wide-range of helpful options for the man or woman running a small business.

If you have not used much in the way of technology before, see what apps can do for you moving forward.
