Getting It Together

May 10, 2007 by Liz Leave a Comment

Don’t Feel Left Out

Carolyn at Thoughts and Philosophies couldn’t come to Chicago this weekend, so she’s carrying on the spirit of things for both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres at her blog Thoughts & Philosophies. The name of the event is “Getting It Together,” and it has quite a schedule, and some fine folks participating.

Head on over to check it out!

Meet some amazing bloggers online, and do it THIS weekend. Carolyn has set up two sessions — The first is from noon (EDT) Friday May 11th through 6 PM (EDT); the same session will be replayed from 10 PM (EDT) Friday night through 4 AM (EDT) Saturday morning. The presenters include folks we all know — Rick Cockrum, Carma Dutra, Leah Maclean, Nneka, and Jessica Doyle.

Do something great for yourself. Check it out!

Wow! What a cool idea.

David Armano and SOBCon in BusinessWeek

May 9, 2007 by Liz Leave a Comment

In the May 08 issue of his column, Nussbaum on Design, Bruce Nussbaum shines the light on SOBCon and David Armano.

Blog conferences are proliferating and I think it’s because people are discovering that blogging–blogging with a purpose– is harder than it appears. This is a lesson that I’m discovering as I meander into the blogopshere. If you want to influence an audience, you actually have to know how.

And there is no better teacher of these skills than David Armano over at Logic + Emotion. David is talking this Saturday at SOBCon07 (who makes this stuff up?) about taking blogs to the next level.

The writer in me really likes this quote:
“If you want to influence an audience, you actually have to know how.”

Powerful statment, but then, the simple truth usually is.

Thank you, Bruce Nussbaum.

Interview 16.2 Easton Ellsworth — the Blogger

May 3, 2007 by Liz Leave a Comment

Interview and Commentary

easton-ellsworthwith-book.jpg

Yesterday, we found out that Easton is a SuperHero! He won our hearts with stories of his work at home schedule. He also shared some great comments with us and told the story of the PEZ dispenser — in the comments following the interview. Today we find out what kind of blogger Eastonis and what keeps him blogging.

How has blogging changed who you are as a person? What do you hope you will still learn from it? What so far is your greatest blogging success?

Blogging has made me more courageous and less selfish – not because of the technology, but because of the activities and relationships I’ve experienced along the way. I still hope to figure out how to decide at any given moment, what’s the most important thing to say and who to say it to, and in what way. Now there’s a lifelong pursuit! I think my greatest blogging success so far has been using blogs to benefit people in spite of opportunities to do the opposite.

What was the biggest surprise about blogging? What is the part you most enjoy? What is the part you could live without?

How personal it is. That’s what I love most about blogging, by far. I could live without the technological limitations we still have to deal with – the latency, the bugginess, the complexity under the hood.

What’s the best advice you ever got from a blogger about anything? What advice would you like to pass on?

I’ve gotten one supreme piece of advice from several bloggers, and there are several ways of saying it: Don’t give up. Be persistent. Keep at it. Stick with it. I might boil that down to one word: persevere. Change your strategy as needed, but always strive for a higher level of excellence. There’s never a lack of opportunities, only a lack of vision. So get out there, believe in yourself and your power to change the world, and use the opportunities that come to you and create them where you can’t find any. You can do it. So do it. Do it!

Easton, you are an inspiration and a friend. I feel lucky to have met you. Thank you for this interview. Thank you for being a blogger.

SOBCon 07 News and Updates 05-03-07

May 3, 2007 by Liz Leave a Comment

Eight Days and Counting!

Hi Everyone!
Only 8 Days Until SOBCon!
Then we will start one of the most amazing experiences that I can imagine. Think about it. So many people, who have shared each other’s thoughts, there fully present in one room swapping strategies and learning. It has to be synaptically electric. The thought is stunning.

SOBCon 07

Here’s a bit more of what’s going on.

  • Peter Flaschner of the Blog Studio is giving away a $2000 elite blog design prize to one lucky registrant. To be eligible attendees must be fully registered and paid by midnight Saturday, May 4th, 2007. Don’t miss your chance to win this one!
  • Attendees who have completed their paid registration by midnight Saturday, May 4th, 2007 will receive a free copy of Ted Demopoulos’ best-selling blogging book, “Secrets of Successful Blogging.” This offer good only while supplies last — on a first come, first served basis.
  • Andy Sernovitz, David Armano, Phil Gerbyshak, Wendy Piersall, Mike Sansone, and Liz Strauss will be starting conversations all day Saturday at the conference.

Hotels and Housekeeping

It’s true the Sofitel Chicago Ohare is sold out, but four other hotels are within walking distance and quite lovely places to hang your hat for a night. I know several folks are staying at the Crown Plaza Chicago Ohare. Other hotels within walking distance include the Hyatt Regency Ohare, Embassy Suites Chicago Ohare, and the Doubletree Chicago Ohare. All of the hotels are outside of the airport complex and lovely accommodations. You really can’t go wrong.

We sure could use your help to make SOBCon 07 spectacular. Planning a small conference is a lot like planning a large wedding reception.

If you’re like I am, you wait until the very last second to pay for any event like this one. Yet, everything that happens needs to be provided for in advance. So if, like me, you are waiting, know that if you register now we’ll be better able to plan the menus and the other event extras that will make SOBCon the highest-quality experience.

We want this to be the most incredible content-rich, relationship event that comes off without a hitch. We’re grateful to you and our sponsors for anything you might do to help.

Blog Herald Today: If You See This, The Content Is Stolen

May 3, 2007 by Liz Leave a Comment

Sometimes Irony Is Sweet

As a writer, I’ve always taken the idea of owning my work seriously. As a publisher, I’ve always understood that no one can copyright an idea. As blogger, I’m tired of seeing people steal what my friends and I have spent our time working on, tired of watching sploggers toss ads up alongside our work to make their money.
