SxSW and Small Business: A Conference with a Purpose

A Flexible Plan

When I booked to go to SxSW, I had a few considerations on my mind. My blog is the center of my small business . . . a small business needs to be open for the folks who visit here. Still, if I want myself, my business, and my network to grow and go deeper I need to be part of the relationships I care about.

Conferences do matter, especially to small business. For these reasons and many more.

  • Meeting the people we already know face to face deepens relationships that make doing business more meaningful and more effiicient.
  • Sitting in conversation with them allows us time to explore how we might align our mutual goals.
  • Interacting with new people let’s other folks get a real life, real time experience of who we are and give us a chance to elaborate on what we do. Nothing beats eyes on fire when we’re explaining how much a project has captured us to tranlate our investment in quality work.
  • Most importantly, if we want to grow our networks, we have to move to where we can interact with folks who don’t know us, but want to.

I went to SxSw with purpose — to learn more and meet more people. I’m bringing back more perspective, more clients, and more friends to interact with you.

I know a conference where you can do many of the same things. . . . it’s in May. Come to SOBCon08 with a purpose!

I’m pleased and delighted to announce that we’ve updated the front page of the official SOBCon08 event blog. The new information on the page includes a formal invitation to join us in Chicago for this event.

Also included is some information on why we’ve not yet named the location — the hotel. Our choice is close to contract, but venue has to live up to the experience that was SOBCon07. We’ll have things set in days (not weeks), and you’ll be the first to know when we do.

I can’t wait to let the cat out of the bag. 🙂

Dear Lisa and Chris,
I write you as family, because, for me, that’s how it is. I know it was a tough decision to give up your roles in SOBCon08. Don’t think for a second that it changes a thing. Your hands, hearts, and minds are woven through the SOBCon reality that we made from air. No one at SOBCon07 could possibly remember the event without remembering both of you.

But your life, your new business, the future you’re building is a giant dream. It’s worth the journey you’ve set yourselves on. It will be amazing to watch you as you grow your business into your potential. I can’t imagine anything in your way. I sure can see the good things you will do and make.

How could I not have mixed feelings about seeing you leave the team?
I’ll miss your shoulders next to mine. Wonderful folks will help pick up the work, but it will be a long while before I stop looking for the two of you.

But I won’t miss your voice on the phone, because we’ll still take all of the time. . . . and I’ll still see you in Chicago in May!
