Bloggy Book Title Discussion 7

January 15, 2006 by Liz

For those who come looking for a short, thoughtful read, a blogging life discussion, or a way to gradually ease back into the week, tonight I offer a Blogging Question.

This one’s for fun.

Here you go. . . .

Old MS Book

Last week I was emailing with Anthony Dever and I told him that I had been struck with a great title for a blogging book.

American Edition:
If You Think MY Blog Is a Personal Diary, I think your swimsuit came from Gym Class.

World Edition:
If You Think MY Blog Is a Personal Diary, I think your wine comes in a box.

What would your blogging book title be?

65th Crayon Finds that Google Doesn’t Use Search

January 8, 2006 by Liz

Thought I’d share this Sunday fun while you’re waiting for the boxes to get opened. . . . a piece I’m running today on my personal blog.

This Just In from The 65th Crayon:

When he got the call to attend a meeting at Google headquarters, The 65th Crayon was a little perplexed. Our reporter friend hadn’t been there since he had taken them to task last fall for the problem of dlites and dlogs–fake websites and blogs set up by dogs–in the case of the invisible dog spamming the Internet.

“I thought they might be calling for a follow up report,” said our supersleuth reporter, “or I considered that they might have had some new ideas about related Adsense Words. To my surprise, it was nothing of the sort.”

At this point, our remarkable friend pulled a red plastic egg from his pocket, saying “You might not remember these. “This is the original Silly Putty, made from the work of engineer James Wright, who was trying to invent a new kind of rubber. It became a famous toy when it was introduced on the Howdy Doody Show. Since then kids have been pulling, turning, and twisting it and of course, pressing it against the newspaper to pick up pictures.”

“It appears that Crayola the company that sells Silly Putty now offers it in another size–Silly Putty Bulk–and several colors. Apparently the engineers at Google decided that they needed a lot of it.”

The Google engineers tell the story quite well at the Google Blog. This image shows how they put the bulk shipment they were going to share together in a pile for a picture. Later, they couldn’t pry the Google glob apart so that each owner could claim his or her blob of the bigger glob. That’s why they had called in the 65th Crayon.

“Silly people. They thought I might be able topull apart 250 pounds of stuck together Silly Putty. Had they used their famous search engine, they would have known,” the 65th said seriously. “You always call in the crayon expert before handling explosives or Silly Putty.”

Then in usual fashion, our reporter friend tied his trench coat belt and walked off, like Humphrey Bogart.

Click once For Sumeet Jain

January 6, 2006 by Liz

Do you know Sumeet Jain? He’s a CSS whiz. Sumeet Jain came through when I had questions about my blog more than once. He’s an official SOB and a member of our community.

I know we can do this. After all it’s what communities are all about.

Hi everyone!

Some of you may have heard me rattling on before about a project I’m involved in called CalTV. If I haven’t yet given you that spiel, it’s basically a news site run like a video blog of student interview from UC Berkeley.

The next step for us at CalTV is to allow people to post their own interviews by filming themselves from their cell phones. We’re calling this Outspoken Architecture.

Naturally, this kind of functionality takes a lot of time and effort… and money. Motorola is holding a contest for seamless mobility, and our Outspoken Architecture is a finalist! We have a great opportunity here to get some funding, and you can help us out greatly by taking a quick moment to cast your vote for us.

No registration is needed. Just click the link and we’re voted for. There’s even a PDF of our mission if you’d like to make a more informed decision.

Here’s the link: Motorola finalist–Outspoken Architecture

Thanks a lot for your support. Oh, and if you know anyone else who might be interested in this kind of thing, feel free to let them know about the voting 😀

Adios,

—
Sumeet Jain

Let’s show Sumeet Jain and CalTV what a great community we are.

Smiles,

Great Find: 50 Coolest Websites

December 29, 2005 by Liz

Time Tech 50 Coolest Websits Image Link

Great Find: TIME: Tech Time–50 Coolest Websites by Maryanne Murray Buechner
Type of Article: End of Year List
Permalink: 50 Coolest Websites
Target Audience: Any Internet user

Content: Maryanne Murray Buechner defines one quality of cool as something you probably haven’t bookmarked already. She figures there is no value in pointing out what most people already know. The article is divided into five sections.

On the last page, Ms. Murray Buechner reviews the criteria for each section. As a publisher, I might have put this overview first to give readers a “roadmap” to the article. So if you’re like me, you might want to start there and then return to the sections that interest you most. The sections are these.

NEWS AND INFORMATION–less-traveled links to the real world.

LIFESTYLE AND CULTURE–great content and presentation that showcases a particular area of interest.

COMMUNITIES–sites that do a great job of connecting people for work, play, or other common interests.

TOOLS AND ESSENTIALS–sites chosen for their ability to perform a service.

JUST FOR FUN–as the name implies, entertainment.

I’m partial to the lie detector. Although it’s great to see Bloglines getting its due in the “real world.” The IpodLounge and some of the Just for Fun links were nice discoveries.

I think you’ll pick up a site or two from this list you’ll want to visit again. I just can’t imagine that you’ll know everything this list has to offer.

Thank you, Blogarithm–But Why?

December 28, 2005 by Liz

Remember when I spoke of backlinks that were totally bogus?

Well this has me totally confused. . . .

In checking my backlinks for Letting me be . . . random wondering and philosophy I found this link to Bookarithm.com, a page that says their subscribers subscribe to me. Being a visual person, I was taken by how the page on which I’m linked at a glance seems to imply that I am a subscriber too.

blogarithm page

We know I’m fair and I’m nice, but I’m not necessarily the most savvy chick. Until I checked my links, I didn’t know that this blog existed. At least I thought I didn’t, but maybe I had subscribed. The info said date added 10/25. Added to what? I wondered. Did I add it to Blogarithm and not remember? I’ve made mistakes before. You know that.

Thinking perhaps my memory was slipping, I decided to check whether I had signed up for an account–one that I didn’t remember. I tried to login. Here is the message I got.

blogarithm setup

Nice to know my memory is still in tact–or at least that theirs is as bad as mine is. I put on my detective hat and did a little blog-digging. Went straight to Wholinkstome to see what this blog was about. Here’s what I found.

blogarithm wholinkstome

Now I am totally, completely, undeniably, and utterly confused.

Why would a blog with a PageRank 7 need to link a little blog like me? I appreciate the benefit of the Google Juice, believe me. Thank you, Blogarighm, but I’m not sure I understand why.

I just got !!! The subscribers are likely to subscribe to Michael Noggs blog not to Blogarithm–I knew I was making a mistake in here somewhere.

As my friend Nancy says, “Liz, sometimes your so fast, and sometimes you’re sooooo sloooow.”
