How Will You Find Opportunities Today?
ME Liz Strauss wrote this at 8:02 am
Motivate Yourself to See Beyond the Situation?

We can be so task oriented that we miss the opportunity in the person that we’re meeting. Every person represents all of the people that person has ever met or might introduce us to.
That person might be an interviewer or a taxi driver or a server in a restaurant. When you say hello don’t just think about the person think about the opportunity.
If we make a connection with a person, even if that person has nothing that might align with our goals … he or she might represent a connection to someone or something who does.
People are the opportunities
How will you find opportunities today?
I dare you to claim a way in the comment box.

Hi Liz,
I love your post: short, sweet and interactive!
So true too! So, let me think, we are heading into town to go to the U2 concert in a couple of hours, so for sure, on the way, we will have LOTS of opportunities!!! At the train station, in the train, at the concert…

YES, so true! People are the opportunity and everyone has value. Somehow, it seems to easy to forget that today in our rush, rush world.
As always,Liz, you hit the nail on the head! I am sitting here in Cinque Terre, Italy and decided to stop by your blog as you were on my mind due to Blogher & Tbex in Chicago. Glad I stopped by!
One of the great things about a travel lifestyle, it makes us realize how much we need people. After over 3 years of this, I am still amazed at how kind people are to travelers and go out of their way to help ( both online and in person). We give back by sharing what we learn.
It has open my eyes to how important and how easy, connection and collaboation is! Traveling forces one to reach out to others ( like when lost or needing someone to take photo of you!).
Perhaps everyone should think like a traveler in their own town and realize that everyone around them is an opportunity just waiting to be asked!

Hi ST3!
People have so much to offer us if we only open ourselves to receive. I’ve been so lucky to know so many good people. I can’t help but celebrate all of them. Sounds like you feel the same way.

There’s a tried and true sign for retailers which reads, “Customers are not an interruption of your work, they are the reason for it!”
I’d say your post is a welcomed twist on that saying. No matter WHAT business you’re in - PEOPLE are the driving force behind what you do.
I’ll never cease to be amazed at the valuable information I’ll get from the most unlikely of sources - like a taxi driver, a waitress or even a clerk in a store.
Just as a business owner should treat every customer as if they’re a Liz Strauss - author of a hugely popular and well read blog - we should treat everyone we meet as if they too have valuable connections and information to share.

Wow great post I feel the exact same way about people and opportunity. I think the people who have absolutely nothing to do with your goals have the best insight on the subject, because the look at things with such a different perspective. If you’re always looking for it, you get ideas and solutions to complex problems when you least expect it. So I teach myself to always expect it, no matter whom I am interacting with. Great Post!

Thanks for this insightful post. A lot of people in transition (myself included, sometimes) try to look at which jobs they will fit into. But I am learning to realize that it should be the other way around.

Hi Kathy,
Yeah, it’s a lesson I’ve learned … when I have a question I ask it. Funniest thing, I get more answers that way.
Kathy, your point is most valuable that we should treat every person as if they bring the utmost value to our lives. Because most of them do… I think you’ve brought so much to mine.

Hi Michael,
Great to see you!
When I look at people as only the work they offer. I miss so much about what they bring. I lose by closing them into some box I’ve made up. When I open myself up to listen for other insights I’m enriched and often so much more good things than I might ever have expected when the conversation began.
Look at the great things coming from just this little thought of mine.

Tim,
That’s it exactly. Look for where you’ll fit in perfectly. Ask yourself where and how can you contribute the spaces will start to open for you. Ideas will come.

Hi Holly!
Today I took the time to pay attention to the people who are already in my life. Whoa what a great day that made for me! I got a lot done and with such satisfaction. And everyone around me was sooooo nice.
