Why Would You Want to Use Facebook Advertising?

October 29, 2008 by Guest Author

by Guest Writer Alexis Brown

Last night, I learned I am the only person on Facebook.

Really, it’s true – according to a 30-year-old, female home-based business owner (also known as my sister).

As flattering as it would be for the world’s fastest-growing social network to exist solely for my benefit, I found myself more concerned than amused by her statement. Forget the constant barrage of buzz concerning how social media has turned traditional advertising on its head for big companies, like Colgate.

She – like quite a few freelancers, consultants and other small entrepreneurs – just didn’t get that social media has tremendous business value on a small scale.

Prospects in your own backyard are in reach through social media and – when reaching people in your backyard would normally cost money – getting in touch with them doesn’t have to cost a thing.

We were having this conversation because I explaining to her how to get free ads from Facebook. Since July of this year, The Visa Business Network has been offering USD$100 worth of free Facebook advertising through its social application. Facebook Ads allow advertisers to easily target people by age, gender, workplace, school, personal interests and any location around the world in order to create an ad for anything about you have to offer. I have nothing to do with Facebook, but I would encourage anyone to get on board with this because of the results I’ve had.

Sure, anyone can advertise on search engines or blog network ads (although, not for free), but these ads are targeted with more relevance based on information people put in their Facebook profiles.

Take this example – a very small campaign, from my own experience a few weeks ago, brought in more than 170 visitors in a weekend.

On the other hand, her traffic?

Zilch.

Her site brings her no new prospects and definitely no new business.

To boot, her hosting company just raised its prices.

You’d think a lot of people in this same position, would jump at opportunities to test and measure free marketing opportunities they can understand.

Understand face-to-face networking? Get into online social networking.

Understand classified ads? Get into Facebook Social Ads.

It seems, however, that no matter who builds it – if business owners don’t get it, they won’t come.

Your customers want you to get it.

According to the 2008 Cone Business in Social Media Study:

  • 33% of consumers (18-34) and those with household incomes over $75,000 believe that companies should try to market to them through social networks
  • 60% of Americans regularly interact with companies on a social media site
  • 43% of consumers say that companies should use social networks to solve the consumers’ problems
  • 41% believe that companies should use social media tools to solicit feedback on products and services
  • Men are more likely to use social media tools to interact with a company than women (33% vs. 17%)
  • Companies should solicit feedback on their products and services (41%)
  • Companies should develop new ways for consumers to interact with their brand (37%)
  • Companies should market to consumers (25%)

The great news? “Getting it” with Facebook means up to $100 of targeted advertising at no cost! Although a credit card is required to sign up for an ad, the advertising costs are charged to your Facebook Ad Credit, as seen below. Anything in excess of $100, per account, is charged to your card. You can use daily budgets and maximum spending limits to control how much your ad performs, each day.

Writing a Facebook Ad is similar enough to writing an effective classified ad – just online.

With a good call to action, whether the goal is to get people to contact you or initiate a subscription, Facebook Ads can point people straight to any opt-in you have on your site.

In this example from the same campaign, one such goal received a 33% higher than normal completion rate with traffic originating from Facebook Ads.

Because the traffic is relevant, they have higher interest in your content than most sites and are more likely to leave their personal information, which equal more leads to begin moving down the sales funnel for more profits.

Last night, I learned I am the only person on Facebook. How do you advertise your business? Do you use social media?

Beach Notes: Beach Meditation

October 26, 2008 by Guest Author

Beach Notes by Guest Writer Suzie Cheel

Each morning this week after our walk and swim I have been meditating.
Today as I sat on a rock and looked out at the clear blue sea, to the horizon these words formed.

Meditating sitting on

the sun warmed rock

At the place I call paradise

My feet resting

on the warm white sand

Listening to the sound of the sea

I feel connected  to the earth

To my soul

To my very being

How do you find you way to reconnect?

Seeing and Imagining

October 12, 2008 by Guest Author

Beach Notes by Guest Writer Suzie Cheel

I have been working on getting clarity about various aspects of my life and find my morning beach walk a good place to reflect.

Today I am following Liz’s 25 word writing exercise for this weeks beach notes:

There are times when the sea

is so clear

you can see

the shoals of fish

twist and turn

other times you

must imagine them.

-Suzie Cheel

Are there times when something is crystal clear one day and the next day the clarity is a little foggy?

Kindness in Action – You have the power to change the world

October 8, 2008 by Guest Author

You have the power to change the world
by Mark Hayward

changetheworld8

Do certain local or global issues affect you deeply? Would you like to take action and help?

You have the POWER to change the world! Sounds cliché, but please read those words again and think about what is important to you, to society. In this blogging and social media age you don’t have to be associated with a huge humanitarian organization or educational foundation in order to take action.

In fact, if you would like to create your own non-profit group to assist a particular cause, opportunities abound for you to make a positive and lasting change. The best part, most of the technology needed to help spread the word is available for free or at a minimal charge.

Some Background Information

The other day when I read Liz’s post, Open Up a World of Solutions with One Idea. She seemed a bit frustrated because whatever she was trying to put together was not working out that well for her. In fact, she stated:

This time it’s not joy I’m sharing. It’s a state of confusion, a search for solutions, a total frustration with my inability to make things connect in the direction that was my intention.

I am not quite sure what was troubling Liz that day, however, being the eternal optimist, she goes on to end the post by stating, “We can change the world — just like that.”

Truly, I believe that we, as individuals, and collectively as a group, can change the world. For many years I would watch stories on the evening news of horrific events that were taking place around the globe in places like Boznia and Rwanda and even in the USA (hurricane Katrina for one).

While I always had pity and empathized with those who were being affected by various events, I NEVER actually took action.

Time to Act

While serving as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer in Papua New Guinea I tragically witnessed many people die from various illnesses that afflict developing countries, however, it was an incident that occurred during the final night in my village, which finally spawned a call to action.

As my wife and I were packing our things and saying goodbye to friends we could hear screams coming from the little bush hut that acted as an aid station and we went to investigate further.

Upon our arrival we witnessed a young woman of about ten or eleven fighting through the final stages of cerebral malaria and there was nothing we could do to help. The incident, and the image of her struggling and fighting dementia, has been indelibly burned into my mind.

That evening after the young woman passed I made a vow to myself that if I were ever in a position where I owned my own business and could dedicate some of my time to helping assist in certain global crises then I would.

At the time I didn’t know what I would do exactly, or how I would do it, but I was determined and serious.

Train for Humanity Launches

Recently, in collaboration with some other bloggers in various corners of the world (most notably Leo Babauta of Zen Habits), I turned my pity and apathy into action and launched Train for Humanity to help raise funds and awareness for orphans and refugees who have been affected by genocide. (You can read the full story here: How Did Train for Humanity Get Its Start? )

Our mission is simple: getting fit + social media + blogging = social good

We, the founding members, have combined our collective passion for exercise and getting in shape with the power of blogging and social media in an effort to assist in a dire humanitarian crisis in Darfur. During the pilot project, three bloggers, Leo Babauta, Dan Clements, and I are training for various endurance events and trying to raise funds for Darfur Peace and Development’s Shegegkaro School, which was recently bombed and subsequently destroyed.

The Power to Change the World and You

This post isn’t really about me, on the contrary, it’s meant to be about YOU and your particular cause.

If you find yourself in a similar situation as me and if certain issues affect you (and you would like to help) I would strongly urge you to go ahead and take the next steps toward action. The tools are all there for you. You just have to be willing to use them and the rest comes down to innovation, creativity, energy, and time.

Certainly, it doesn’t even have to be a global crisis, but could just as easily be an issue closer to home. Perhaps your child’s school could use more funding, or maybe you are moved by the plight of stray animals?

To help you get started here are Six Tips to Help You Take Action:

    1. Make it REAL – let someone know about your interest to start an organization or desire to take action.
    1. Register your domain name – domains cost about $10.00 a year to register.
    1. Get web hosting – you can get reliable hosting for $4.95 a month (or less).
    1. Download and install WordPress – if you are reading Liz’s site I am sure you already know this but WordPress is a very powerful, freely available, blogging and CMS software.
    1. Google alert – setup a Google alert for your particular cause or keyword (for me it was Darfur).
    1. Begin networking – from the “listening” and information gathering that you undertake with your Google alert, begin networking via social media (Twitter, FaceBook, etc) and leaving comments on blogs of similar, like-minded individuals.

Additionally, because you are reading Liz’s blog I am going to assume that you are already familiar with blogging and social media, but if you know of others who might need some resource material to help them get started, below are five topical blog posts which should help folks take the first steps.

Chris Brogan – 50 Ways to Take Your Blog to the Next Level

Now it’s your turn. What causes are you passionate about? What would you like to change about the world, or even your hometown, today? Do you have other tips that might help us take action and really change the world?

He is currently training for the Miami Man triathlon to raise funds for the recently bombed the ShegegKaro School in Darfur. You can follow him on Twitter or check out his blog MyTropicalEscape.

Thanks, Mark!

We can change the world — just like that.

Spring in the Southern Hemisphere

October 5, 2008 by Guest Author

Beach Notes by Guest Writer Suzie Cheel

Our southern hemisphere spring has come late this year,

The purple flowers of the jacaranda tree are just emerging

The winds of August still blow this October

Yesterday I took my first plunge into the salty sea

I shivered as the cool water touched my skin.

Then I dived into the clear blue sea and swam

I emerged feeling alive and reenergised

The healing power of the sea.

What is your response to the energy around you?
