Introducing Brightmeadow

January 13, 2006 by Liz

SOB Directory Entry: Brightmeadow by Cas

Type: Two, Two, Two Blogs in One

brightmeadow logo

Bright Meadow is the focus for a rambling chat among friends (new and old) about sites, blogs, and other tid-bits gleaned from daily trawls of the internet. It’s also part of an ongoing project to persuade fellow academics that the Web really isn’t such a scary place. If on occasion she makes even one person stop, think, and look at something differently, then Cas is happy. If she’s made people laugh, well, that’s even better.

Notes from Liz: Cas may have been shy at first about commenting–or was she just busy? Hmmmm. I wonder? She knows her stuff . Her comments and commentary are informed, intelligent and pithy. Don’t let that penguin fool you. I think he’s a spy collecting data for her project. Gas is the Guest Writer on the Series How to Code Assessible Links

SOB Buttons and Directory Update

January 13, 2006 by Liz

The SOB Directory and other pages are under construction. New Pictures. New Presentations. I thought it best to keep the Directory undercover until I got more of your bios in. So start sending them . . . . hint, hint, grin. 🙂

The SOB Button Still Exists

If you are an official SOB and need a new one. Here you go.

SOB Button

By the way, please feel free to adjust the size to fit your blog design. We want SOBs to have Successful and Outstanding Blog Designs too.

If you’re anxious to become an SOB, just link a post to share it with your readers. Write about it to add value to the conversation, and email me at lizsun2@gmail.com with a link to your post.
That’s all there is to it.

More New Features Are Coming

So hang in there. The fun is just starting. Some really strong articles are coming too.

9rules Communites

January 12, 2006 by Liz

I might be a day or two behind the others, but I still want to add my remarks about 9rules Communities. In a few words: what a great idea!

Scrivs took what was a bunch of little things that readers had to sort through, basically a glorified directory, and gave it form and substance. He did what Tom Peters would call “adding value.” What’s not to like about it?

By placing like blogs together in communities, Scrivs not only serves his readers, he serves his bloggers, and his advertisers–one of whom will be himself in the near future, they say. They say the bloggers love it. I can see why they might. The opportunities for collaboration become more natural, and their visibility within 9rules has grown exponentially for their target readers.

Which leads us to 9rules Featured. This one is not quite so clearly defined–I couldn’t find for sure whether it features content already on the 9rules blogs, new content from the 9rules bloggers, or maybe even content from outside 9rules–whatever the case, the potential of 9rules Featured is equally as powerful. It has the marketing value of Baskin-Robbins 31 take a taste. Most tastes end up in a hefty sale or two, so to speak. The “killer app” of this particular element is that you can get the feed of all the featured posts.

I sent Scrivs an email to tell him exactly what I said here the day I first saw the new presentation.

Now I’m oh so tempted to say, hey Paul, you have the SOB Network! But I think it’s too big for the Button. 🙂

Introducing Cottontimer

January 11, 2006 by Liz

SOB Directory Entry: Cottontimer by Hsien-Hsien Lei

Type: Personal Blog by Professional Blogger who Smiles

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Cottontimer, aka Hsien-Hsien Lei, is a professional blogger writing about science, health, and parenting. Cotton-Pickin’ Days is a personal blog about her life and work. The main focus is on Hsien’s nearly 10 years of living as an expat in Asia and Europe.

Notes from Liz: The word professional is not an overstatement in any way when talking about Hsien-Hsien or her writing. She’s a blogger other bloggers look up to and try to emulate. I know I do. Her writing is a reflection of who she is strong, warm, incredibly well-informed, and easy to take. In fact, I’d take her home with me if she lived closer.

A Blogger’s Personal Narrative Checklist

January 10, 2006 by Liz

Successful bloggers write well. As a professional writer, I have a few tips, tricks, techniques, strategies, and of course, checklists that I use to keep me on the right path. It’s time I started sharing them.

Almost everyone uses personal narratives. They’re the stories we tell to our families and friends. They’re the incidents we relate at work about meetings we attended. A personal narrative is any story you might tell about something that really happened to you. Bloggers do that all of the time.

Use this short checklist to review your next personal narrative to add value and polish to it.

Personal Narrative Content Editor’s Checklist

  • Does the introduction make readers want to continue?
  • Are the events clear and in chronological order?
  • Does the body stay to the core of the story, using only rich and relevant details for support? Less is definitely more in most cases.
  • Do you use exact words that portray the experience in a way the reader can understand it?
  • Does the conclusion tie the story together, leaving the reader glad to have read it?

Taking a minute to review the narratives you tell will kick them up a notch. Your writing will be just that bit more entertaining. It might be the difference that makes readers bookmark your blog to come back again.

Introducing Simplenomics

January 10, 2006 by Liz

SOB Directory Entry: Simplenomics by Mike Sigers

Categories: Sales, Marketing, Entertainment

simplenomics logo

Simplenomics, written by Mike Sigers, is trying to give the world a look at how to use common sense to get more out of your sales, marketing, advertising and management efforts. Mike’s not for sale at any price, so don’t ask for consultation time. Well, you can ask, but send money first.

Notes from Liz: I swear that Mike’s directory listing was in my email before I even posted the announcement about the SOB Directory. I’m not sure how he knows things so quickly. It was Mike’s idea, you know, that SOBs should get buttons for their blogs.

Maybe Mike and I are really the same person. I’ve never seen us in one room at the same time. Hmmmm.
