Fresh-cut Flowers in Every Room

October 20, 2006 by Liz

I've been thinking . . .
When I was 40, I went for a drive with Nancy — my close friend who owns a Porsche, and we ended up at a movie. Who knows, who cares which movie it was?

I do remember this much of the movie: the high gloss mahogany table in the center of the entry hall had a vase of tall, beautiful, fresh-cut flowers from the gardens. They were breathtaking. They made me notice that every room in the mansion of the movie had a table with glorious flowers.

After the movie, Nancy and I walked in silence to the Porsche. We let our movies sink in that way. She had her thoughts. I had mine. I was thinking about those flowers. When I grow up, I’m going to have fresh cut flowers in every room of my house.

That thought stopped me in my tracks.

Nancy stopped too. She knows me well enough. She looked at me in anticipation. “Yes?” was all she needed to say.

“What am I waiting for?”

“You’re waiting? You’re stopped. What are you waiting for?”

I started slowly walking in circles around the late night parking lot. I was watching my sneakers, as if the words were hidden on my shoelaces.

“No, no. Here I am 40 years old. I’ve built a new home. I’ve got a great job, and I left that movie thinking When I grow up I’ll have fresh flowers in every room in my house. What am I waiting for? “

“And?” She had faith I’d figure it out.

“When exactly did I think that would be? What’s stopping me from doing that now?”

“And your answer to that?”

“I’m giving myself permission right now to have fresh flowers in my house from this day now on. Think this little car could take us somewhere that we could buy flowers on the way home?”

“Sure thing,” she smiled, the way she does.

The next week I became a gardener and in a month I had fresh flowers in my office every day too. . . .

Friday is a good day to give yourself permission to do something you forgot you always wanted to do.

No Worries

October 13, 2006 by Liz

I've been thinking . . .
When I was traveling to other countries, what I was most likely to bring home were a tiny change in my accent and a word or phrase that became mine forever. I also bought lots of books and an occasional other thing, but who knows where they went?

Considering my love of words, I think I ended up with a nice collection of souveniers.

One word I got from the Brits was Brilliant! It’s a lovely word for describing something wonderful and magical.

From the Italians, I carried home a pair Prego, Grazie. How much more musical could welcome and thank you sound? I want a life filled with the two of them.

In OZ, the land of the Australians, I couldn’t leave without No Worries. They’ve become my weekend words.

“No Worries.”

I worked out a while back that worrying about things I can’t change doesn’t make stuff any better and doesn’t make me feel good either. In fact, worrying makes me cranky. I get to feeling sorry for myself.

Talk about a way to blow weekend — being cranky ranks right up there.

So I subscribe to “No Worries” weekends.

(I have my meltdowns on Thursdays, if I really need one.)

Get Edgy: Contest Ideas to Push ANY Blog to the Remarkable Edge

October 10, 2006 by Liz

Writing Contests as Edgecraft

Power Writing Series Logo

Writing contests, I know you’ve seen ’em so have I. I’m a writer and I don’t have time to enter them. I imagine that most techies and other nonwriters pass them by completely.

If you want my attention, doing two things is important.

Mix something successful from over there to something you have here.

Find the edge of here — be noticed, outstanding, and remarkable.

Seth calls moving out to that remarkable edge edgecrafting. It’s knowing who you are, knowing what business you’re in, and not letting tradition or the perceived risk — that perceived risk that edging out comes packaged in. It’s investing in, inventing, or trying new things to make a mark that will get people remarking about what you’re doing.

A nonwriting blog — say a techie blog — having a writing contest is a remix with posibilities. Curious at the very least, don’t you think? Gotta get past curious to way out there, in order to be at the edge.

I’ve got some ideas . . .

How to Set Up a Contest that Works

Nothing is less fun than a contest where no one shows up. So let’s start with the basics that tilt the balance in your favor.

  1. Keep the rules few and the task simple.
  2. Keep the deadline definite and the timeline short, but not too short — a week is good.
  3. Announce it as many ways as you can. Remind folks daily on your blog. Send out email. Ask friends and colleagues to pass the word. Seek out and list your contest at sites such as competizione.

That being said, what kind of writing context might catch readers’ attention and get them to participate?

I’ve got a few ideas. . . .

When that Friday Thing Happens . . .

October 6, 2006 by Liz

I've been thinking . . .
When I commuted between Southern California and Boston, I finally quit traveling on Fridays, because that Friday thing always happened. Some little incident, accident, impediment to my leaving popped up . . . ah, it was never anything really. On Fridays, things just seem bigger than they are, especially when you’re traveling.

So I decided it was worth it to fly home on Saturday, and it sure was.

That took care of one kind of Friday thing — the people who lined up at the door as I was leaving — people with questions, suggestions, and decisions they felt couldn’t wait.

But it didn’t take care of that other Friday thing — the thought in my head that I wanted to have everything put to bed for the weekend to start. How unrealistic is that?

As the day would wear on little things would seem to get BIG, because of that thought. They got BIG and as a result, I got small.

Until I was lucky enough to find myself thinking this question, “Do you really want to be someone who gets so involved over something so tiny?”

These days I use that Friday question, a lot.

Life, Weekends, Memories — Finding Time for the Time of Your Life

September 22, 2006 by Liz

I've been thinking . . .
One Friday ritual that happens in offices is that people ask What are you doing this weekend? I’ve never been good at small talk in general, but I had to study to answer that question.

I kept a list of responses that sounded somewhat normal.

“I’m going for quiet and relaxation.”

“I think a good book is in order.”

“I have an appointment with my pillow.”

“I’m just so happy to be having a weekend.”

You might note that all of my answers basically say the same thing that my friend, KB, once said, “Liz doesn’t do weekends.”

I used to say, “Hey, I made my quota of decisions at the office. The last thing I want to do is come home to make more of them — decide what to do, where to go, what to eat, where to eat it, when to go there, what to wear.”

So instead I’d stay home and let life happen.

Sometimes life happens in ways worth remembering. Most often it doesn’t. Time just passes.

That’s what I’ve been thinking about lately. I don’t make plans — too many options. I can talk myself out of almost anything.

“Do something.”

“Do what?”

“I don’t know. What do you want to do?”

“How about this. Too crowded.”

“This? Too expensive.”

“This? Too far. . . . too early . . . too late . . . too extravagant . . . too boring . . . too edgy . . . too too.”

I think I should stay home.

I care more about who I do things with than what I do. So when someone suggests anything, I go. Most cool things I’ve done have been because someone invited me.

That sure is a passive way to live life, waiting for it to come to me.

I’m getting back in the driver’s seat. Plans are now part of my personal navigation. I’m finding time for the time of my life.

Life isn’t made of weekends. It’s made of memories.

I’ve decided it’s time to start making some outstanding ones.
