Beach Notes: Whale Sculpture

At this time of the year it’s a common occurrence for us to see one or more whales just offshore from our local beaches, on their annual migration north. Occasionally we are lucky enough to see one breaching. The picture is of one of the sculptures in the 2008 Swell sculpture festival – an annual event – at Currumbin Beach, about 15 minutes from where we live. “Helidon Breach”, the title of the work by Matthew Bath, references both the magnificent sight of a whale breaching and the source of the beautiful white Australian sandstone from Helidon, Queensland.

Beach Notes: Waiting for the Mullet

On a recent afternoon walk we saw the local fishers’ trucks and boats lined up and we stopped to talk. They were waiting for the mullet to come their way from the nearby estuary.

We’ve seen this team explode into action once the fish arrive, working the boats and nets and trucks with a huge expenditure of energy and fast, military-like precision. But right then they just had to sit and wait till the fish arrived. How would they know? Simple, the color of the sea would change. Simple for them.

Knowledge, experience, skill, the right tools ready, the team assembled, ready for action.

All good.

But sometimes you just have to wait.

Beach Notes: Do Things Differently

You will never know what you might see!

We are normally at the beach early morning and often see stunning sunrises. On Friday we were shopping by the beach and we had loaded the car up and i was about to get in when Des said: “Look at the sky.” I looked up and saw this amazing sky.
Sometimes we are preoccupied with the task at had that we can miss the beauty around us. We almost missed this magnificent sunset.

We were greeted at the beach yesterday with a rainbow
Such a magical way to start the day
We reflected on the abundance we are surrounded with
And it reminded us how how essential it is
To spend time in nature at least once a day
Away from the computer.
