Make Some Fun

October 9, 2007 by Liz

How-cool-is-that?!!!

Hey! Happy Tuesday!

Have you got something that you were supposed to have started?

. . . some project that you haven’t quite gotten to . . .

You can’t delegate it because that wouldn’t be right.

You want the project to be stellar . . .

. . . despite the fact that it’s not where you shine.

Flying in the dark isn’t what folks usually want to do.

Is something like that nagging you?
Or maybe sitting on your shoulder whispering in your ear?

neighborhood-kids

Turn it into a caper.

. . . Ask the kids in the neighborhood
to help make it an adventure . . .

Bet with their help you could find a way
to make that project fun.

What do you think?

What Makes Us Wise?

October 7, 2007 by Liz

I've been thinking . . .

about wisdom. What does it mean to be wise?

Liz-Strauss-September-2007-Sunrise-Lake-Michigan

Am I wise because I’ve known me for a long time? I know what knocked me down and what it took to get back up again. I can’t fool me. I’d have to do some serious choreography to avoid seeing the part I play in each. When I rise it’s because other people help me and when I fall it’s because I ignore them.

Is that wisdom or learning?

Am I wise because I’ll always reaching for my prime? I keep it out there on the horizon with the morning sunrise on the lake. It grounds me. I’ve realized that I’ve got one life to mold into a decent human being. It’s a big job to attend to with a universe of possibilities.

Is that wisdom or learning?

Am I wise because I know that incredible people are the only kind that I meet? Every person is wonder. Everyone brings something I can learn or make my own. It’s amazing — We are a university of humanity.

Is that wisdom or learning?

What makes us wise? Is wisdom something we only see in other people?

Does wisdom fade when we get closer?

Universal Thoughts

October 5, 2007 by Liz

I've been thinking . . .

about the power of thoughts.

They say that what I think is the deciding factor in what the universe serves up to me. I can see the sense of that.

As I think, I see.

When I choose to focus on the brighter, smarter ideas and people, I seem to find them more.

When I’m sure of my direction, folks follow me. When I’m feeling insecure, folks challenge my ideas. It’s hardly quantum physics to calculate that why should be.

As I think, I feel.

When I’m certain that what I’ll be doing is going to turn out right, it always seems to . . . maybe that’s because I make it so. When I know I’m on the right track, it’s as if I touch a cloud to make the right things rain down

As I think, I am.

This weekend the universe is supporting every good dream.

I’m going to think it so.

What about you?

Jersey Todd, Vince Lombardi, and Collecting Quotes of Humanity

September 27, 2007 by Liz

I've been thinking . . .

Jersey Todd sent me this quote by the famed Vince Lombardi, a legend in American football coaching.

“Once you agree upon the price you and your family must pay for success, it enables you to ignore the minor hurts, the opponent’s pressure, and the temporary failures. ”

That got me thinking about success, and then . . .

And then, it got me thinking about Jersey Todd and Vince Lombardi — and all of the men and women who are like them, which got me thinking about how alike we all are. You see, I’m guessing that most of us already know what Mr. Lombardi was saying.

Been-There-Done-That!

I’m thinking that’s the reason we collect quotes and send them to friends. Those words of wisdom we pull out to share for whatever reason are a way of saying, “Hey, look . . . see. We might choose other words. Our experience of them might look different, but the essence is that we’ve been there. . . . and so has he.

Inspiring isn’t it that a sentence one person said years ago would be kept and valued?Amazing to see how a sentence can be a fine thread that connects and translates our humanity.

We’re there inside the words we say. We already know that.
If we look closer, we’ll find ourselves inside the words that everyone is saying,
Words connect us as human beings.

Young children know this.

” “Promise me you’ll always remember: You’re braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.” –Christopher Robin to Pooh(A.A. Milne, Winnie the Pooh)

Would you add your own quote to the list?

The Game of Life

September 26, 2007 by Liz

I've been thinking . . .

how we make things work.

We finish a day’s work exhausted, burnt out, bone tired. If we were asked to keep going, it would be a stretch — nor a healthy thing. Do we go home to rest? Do we take a nap, rejuvenate and refuel? No, most of us don’t. An hour or two later, you’ll find us out dancing, playing ball, or at the gym lifting weights.

Many of the sports and activities that we do for fun require more physical and mental energy than what we need to invest to get through a work day. Yet, they don’t wear us out nearly as much, and in some cases, they pick us back up.

How is that? It’s no surprise that it has to do with how we think about work.

The Game of Life
Years ago, Charles A. Coonradt tested his idea by turning work tasks into measurable self-competing contests — games that could be won. Folks were asked to weigh the paper they filed every day. Within 3 weeks, a department that had overdue filing for 3 years was ahead and found itself with 3 hours extra each day. The people in the department asked for more work — new work — that they could measure that way. [He called his book, The Game of Work.]

Sometimes I use this technique to get myself to conquer tasks I’m not fond of doing. Today I’m wondering what life would be like if I took the same approach to everything I do?

Have you thought about that? What problem would be easier if you thought of it as one more level, challenge, quest, in the game of life?

Girls, and Boys, and Best Friends for Life

September 23, 2007 by Liz

Talk or Action?

relationships button

When he was in high school, my son and I drove a few hours to visit a friend in at her family’s summer house. On our way home, we talked about the ways that people relate to each other.

He wondered why gossip was important, especially to the girls.

I told him I didn’t know the answer, but that I thought it had to do with point of view. I explained that through my life I had made some observations — so had his father. I said, “When you were in preschool, your dad was amazed to see the difference between the boys and girls each afternoon when he would come to collect you.”

“In what way?”

Friends

I said that the boys were all physical energy, often bouncing off the walls. The girls were all conversational, often chattering out of control. It seemed true of most young children.

I told him that I had figured it out this way.

Maybe it’s that girls do things together so we can talk to each other, and guys talk to each other so that they can do things together.

My 16-year-old said “So that would be why, then, that most guys quit having ‘best friends’ after about age 10.”

I said, “I hadn’t really thought of that.”

I don’t know that boys and girls are so clear cut definable. I’m not qualified to say so. I know I watched the boys I taught seek out other boys who liked to play the same games. I saw the girls I taught seek out games that were conversational venues. Smarter folks haven’t quite explained what makes it so. I only have my limited experience to go on.

A friend listens, understand, and knows who I am.
A friend shares my interests in action. Friends walk the walk.

Maybe the combination is where best friends for life are found.

I guess I notice, because I’m just a bit of the exception. I wonder if it’s the same or different where you come from?
