Change the World: Ask for What You Need

August 13, 2007 by Liz

In a Dirty Shirt

changetheworld8

Richard was the boy in my first grade class who never had quite enough for lunch. He made his way to school alone along the back path on foot. He told stories no one believed, and he always wore the same wrinkled and stained shirt. Unless they had reason, the other kids left him alone.

Every morning as writing practice, I wrote a sentence starter on the board. The kids would copy it down. Then they’d finish the sentence with their own words and continue writing on. The language they wrote in, a special one called First Gradian, was one only they could decode, but the practice of putting a message in text was an important. So after they wrote, I asked each child to read his or her missive aloud.

On this morning, the sentence starter was What I really want is . . .

It was a big class for a first grade, and so there were many answers. One by one, the children came up to read their papers. They asked for a bike, a trip to the circus, a video game, the latest doll — all were innocent dreams of children with no worries. All except one.

Richard’s paper showed only more two words longer than those I had written down. He stood by my desk turned toward the group and read.

What I want is . . . a hug.

A child in the front came up and gave him one. Then came another. Soon a room of first graders was hugging each other.

Richard was brave and vulnerable. He knew what he needed, and he asked.

We can change the world — just like that.

Bloggy Question 59: A Whole New Blog Network?

August 12, 2007 by Liz

According to Daniel Pink . . .

For those who come looking for a short, thoughtful read, a blogging life discussion, or a way to gradually ease back into the week. I offer this bloggy life question. . . .

Congratulations! Consolidated Media has acquired your blog for US$100,000. Better yet, they’ve been paying you the same six figures to write for them for the past six months. Life is good. You’ve enjoyed more money, more traffic, more-engaged readers, and a couple of tasteful ads on your blog. You couldn’t feel better about how things have been going. Well, that was until this morning.

This morning, you received an email quoting Daniel Pink’s book “A Whole New Mind.” Here’s what the email said.

_______

Dear Consolidated Author,
Consolidated Media is pleased to announce a new initiative, “The Whole New Network.” This initiative, based on Daniel Pink’s famous work, “A Whole New Mind,” will move us firmly into the 21st Century. To quote Mr. Pink

“Today, the defining skills of the previous era — the “left brain” capabilities that powered the Information Age — are necessary but no longer sufficient. And the capabilities we once disdained or thought frivolous — the “right-brain” qualities of inventivesnes, empathy, joyfulness, and meaning — increasingly will determine who flourishes and who flounders.”

With these words in mind, Consolidated is setting aside our left-brain, spreadsheet image to support our right-brain thinkers in these ways.

  • Webinars will begin next week on empathy and play as the driving force of business.
  • We’ll be renaming your categories to reflect “high touch” and “high concept” values.
  • We are lifting the posting requirement of 6 posts per week. Post when it’s creatively important.
  • Blog posts that score well for high-emotion keywords relating to empathy, play, and finding meaning will receive a monetary bonus of US$1.00/keyword. You’ll be receiving a list of words that qualify, please feel free to propose others.
  • Most of all have fun!

Thank you for joining our initiative to launch a Whole New Network. Feel free to offer feedback on how we might make this plan more successful.

Sincerely,
Consolidated Media
________

You can see plainly that Consolidated Media has missed Dan Pink’s message — that both left and right brain thinking are needed to be successful in this new age.

How do you respond?

Believing Dots

August 12, 2007 by Liz

Connecting dots with The Idea Dude

Connecting Dots logo

Earlier this week, Liz was thinking about the sound of words. It got be me thinking too, how words are affect our hearts, moods and minds. Take for example.

Adversity The word is ominous, like an unscalable mountain.

dotdoticon-tiny

Stephen blogs about facing adversity with examples from his own life. Sometimes adversity is real, other times, it is a perceived position we choose to take in our minds. Stephen talks about our debilitating habit of comparing ourselves to others and how it makes us feel small. It did not feel good. That’s exactly what your ego wants you to feel. He chides himself for that temporary weakness by recognizing, that each and every one of us is exactly where we are supposed to be, right now at this very moment. (If you love his attitude to life, you’ll love his story on self-acceptance.)

Liz looks at it in a very similar way when she says, It’s the knowing that I’m going in the right direction that counts. . . . Who do I want to be? was where my focus belonged. Being true to myself suddenly became easy. Believing in ourselves is the beginning.

Sometimes an adversity is just a setback.

dotdoticon-tiny

Tony tells us the best weapon against setbacks is momentum. It’s about taking responsibility, picking youself up and saving yourself. Tony is smart (btw, he also draws terrific cartoons). Hmm, if we view any adversity as a temporary setback instead of a failure, we have hope. Hope is belief in the future.

Responsibility

dotdoticon-tiny

Being responsible for our own setbacks is something Terry wrote to himself when he was faced with an untenable situation. On that particular day I decided to take control of my life. . . . From that point, I can imagine Terry felt more like the master of his destiny than a victim of circumstance. It made him believe in himself and his says, I still believe.

Hope

dotdoticon-tiny

April coined a very interesting word, Opi. It means future you. It’s a wonderful concept, she says it’s writing about your future in the present tense. To me, it’s about focusing on everything you could be despite where you are today. It’s about setting your own ceiling.

Terry is a terrific singer. To all this week’s dots, I’ll leave you with these words that Terry sang at SOBCon, I hope you don’t mind that I put down in words. How wonderful life is while you’re in the world. . . . It’s for people like you that keep it turned on.

Terry, I believe too!

May the dots be with you!

Introducing: good to know

August 12, 2007 by Liz

SOB Hall of Famer: Martin Burns

good to know

good to know is the answer to all of life’s questions (well, as long as they’re semi-related to looking for a job, and assuming the blog’s author actually has an answer for the question). Beyond that, it’s good advice for the job seeker, and the rest of us humans, from a recruiter that’s in the know. Martin Burns has 8 years of recruiting under his belt, from both the corporate as well as agency side of the business. Some of the things he’s seen job candidates do – especially the most common mistakes – are worth knowing about, either as best practice or (more often) as cautionary tales.

Slightly cheeky voice, good content, and taken from real-world examples (all identifying remarks removed to avoid nasty litigation).

Notes from Liz: Martin Burns is a recruiter who is a person first. His blog, good to know, is a hunk of humanity on the web. In the first few seconds, it’s clear that this guy doesn’t take himself too seriously, but that he is serious about getting folks the information they need. This blog is informative and entertaining — even for readers who are not looking for new employment. I keep reading because it’s so engaging.

Thanks, Martin! Nice to meet you,
