Bloggy Question 46: Beware of Making Noise

April 22, 2007 by Liz

She Didn’t Believe What She Said

For those who come looking for a short, thoughtful read, a blogging life discussion, or a way to gradually ease back into the week. I offer this bloggy life question. . .

A young blogger, someone you have helped in the past, shows you a series of blog posts that she wrote. It’s a week of articles about the bad habits of bloggers. She set herself up as superior to and more informed than all other bloggers.

You ask her whether she believes what she’s written. She admits that she’s trying to “make some noise.” She hopes that her claims will go viral. It’s a sad attempt at gaining publicity and “get-rich-quick links.

You do your best, using words such as authenticity and relationships, to explain that it’s dangerous and unethical to take a stand that she doesn’t believe. She ignores your advice and publishes the first two posts.

A furious response results. People pounce hard. She is dropped from blogrolls. Bloggers talk, but they actually avoid linking to her posts.

You were ready for the heat. You figured that she’d face the fire and learn the hard way. You figured she would gain some humility and grow a bit. You thought you’d help her put things back together when she did.

The surprise was that she never did acknowledge the mistake that she made. She blamed the other bloggers for not getting her “joke.” She quit blogging instead.

It’s a year later. She just emailed you with a question about a new blog.

How do you respond?

What’€™s Your Personal DNA?

April 22, 2007 by Liz

I’m A Benevolent Creator. What’re You?

Liz’s Personal DNA

So I took this silly test, because I needed to play.

Playing is good for the soul, not to mention the brain and the personality. It took — what? — a few minutes and it delivered a colorful reminder that I might have a thing or two going for me.

For no reason than for sheer irresponsibility, go on over, and have a go at it.

Your Free Personal DNA Assessment

It’s just fun little thing to do.

And the bar is colorful.

Isn’t It About Permission?

April 22, 2007 by Liz

plainly-logo.JPG

I was traveling from rural Massachuetts to Chicago. I had taken a job here. My family hadn’t moved yet. I lived in a hotel and went home every other weekend. I knew everyone in the hotel. When it was possible, they gave me the same bedroom every time that I returned.

One boy who worked security was going to Junior College. I helped him with his Algebra every night between 11pm and midnight The folks in the restaurant became my surrogate family. I often stayed past closing. We had conversations about our lives and about how we came to be the people that we are.

One person who worked in the restaurant was going through some particularly hard times. She was weathering them well. One night after the closing, we stayed talking well into the time when the rest of the city was asleep. It was below freezing outside, and the conversation was warm.

My friend, Gina, told about her mother who had died. I told her about mine. We talked about our brothers. We exchanged notes on our respective only children. We shared a mother’s care and a mother’s pride.

Then she told me about her guilt — how she had let the whole world down. Wow, that was my thought, she’s let me down and I didn’t even know it. This generous lady who was always smiling. had let down the whole world. Wait until the world found out. Her life, as she knew it, was so over.

Those words are exactly what I told her.

She said, “You don’t understand. I had to sell some of my mom’s furniture and get a second mortgage on my mom’s house. It was the only option, but my brother is furious.”

I said, “I understand. In the way that only humans can, you seem to have gotten stuck in how the problem is about you and the whole world. I don’t know another way to say this, but the whole world isn’t thinking about you.”

“What?”

“The whole world doesn’t need to you to be feeling guilty.”

“I get that, but I still do.”

“Do you see a time in the future that you will be happy again?”

“Of course I do.”

“Can I make you happy?”

“No, no one can.”

“But you will be?

“YES!”

“So there will be a point in the future at which you will decide that you have felt guilty long enough and you’ll allow yourself to be happy again?”

[silence — thinking]

“So, why wait? Why not just give yourself permission to be happy now? You’ve got no reason to beat yourself up. It really was your only choice, even I can see that. Wait six months or do it now, at some point you’re going to give yourself permission to be happy.”

[silence — thinking — smile] “I’m going to do it now. I hereby give myself permission to be happy.”

“I always knew you were a clever one.”

“Let’s have a glass of wine before you head out in the cold.”

She still has permission.

. . .

It really is about permission, isn’t it?

SOBCon Bad Poetry: Ode to Troy Worman

April 21, 2007 by Liz

For Troy of the 23 Blog Designs a Day

Sofitel Chicago Ohare

In a hotel, northeast of Wendy’s usual location,
on May 11-12, you’ll be finding Troy Worman in Orbit around a another new blogging creation.

These days, I wonder whether Orbit man, Troy Worman, somehow cast a spell on five folks to get SOBCon to start.
Could be that he wanted a chance to meet Ann Michael and Steve Farber at an event that was built from both head and heart?

Orbit Man, did you secretly plan SOBCon to have somewhere to link?
Orbit Man, your power, your glory, your constant design changes make flowers stand tall and weeds shrink.

A ways east of where David Armano lives is the hotel where bloggers will descend.
That the Wor-man has decreed loudly about the 10 Reasons to Attend

Then you point to the Phil Gerbyshak on SOBcon at Essential Keystrokes interview
Char and so many others know link love is always coming from just about everything you do.

Orbit Man, did you secretly plan SOBCon to have somewhere to link?
Orbit Man, your power, your glory, your constant design changes make bloggers smile, investigate, and think.

So I write this bad poetry to you, Mr. Worman, Orbit Now! Man.
I’ve made it a mission. I gave myself permission. I’ve made up my mind.
I’m going to meet the guy, who is so generous, because I need to know
if he changes his clothes as often as he changes his blog design.

Thanks, Troy, for everything.
