Google Page Ranks Underway

February 18, 2006 by Liz

This Just In

Duncan has announced at the Blog Herald that the Google Page Rank is underway.

Why is page rank important
to your blog and your business?

Page rank is Google’s system for ranking pages for its search tool. Page rank determines how relevant your blog is by using linking as a vote system. Google has developed an algorithm that weighs links between blogs A to B to C to A, and also looking also at the importance of the blogs making the links. Quality blogs that are well connected to other quality blogs are considered highly relevant to Google users. Relevant, quality, important blogs receive higher page ranks. Higher page ranks can mean higher advertising payments for blogs that monetize.

Darren offers more on page rank at Problogger.

The checker given by Duncan and Darren is considered the standard and is really all you need. However, there are others. These have varying degrees of accuracy. Here is one page rank checker.
PageRank: Search Engine Optimization

These are page rank predictors not checkers.

The Great Neighborhood Link Post

February 9, 2006 by Liz

Being new to b5media , I wandered down the block to my neighbor’s blogs. I’ve always heard the b5folks are a very friendly bunch. I started with the

Blog Herald Logo

because I needed the fresh air. When I walked in, I was greeted by Duncan’s post on Blog Links Building Traffic and it lead me to a post on

  • The Capitol People Region Blog that makes a compelling argument about links–that links make the difference between a 200,000+ page views a day that Michele Malkin does and the however many pages views a day that you and I do.
  • which lead me to Help build traffic by how you link by our own Sabine’s CT BIZ Blogs
  • and to Going the distance: building blog traffic through perseverance back at the Blog Herald

where I could finish reading the original post where Duncan mentions the Weblog Empire Blog Link Exchange Forum.

Thinking I should visit at least one more neighbor before the day was over, I stopped by to see what had been going on this week at Blogging Tips at

Problogger logo

Darren has been talking about receiving offers to carry links for payment on your blog and what you should consider before you do. While I was there I found two more links from his article on Hate Links.

  • One was The Snark Manifesto that you may have seen going around.
  • The other is Handling Hate by Andy Hagans.

These aren’t really about linking, but about not linking up with bad things.

Checking My Google Neighborhood

Google says I should link with my neighborhood, blogs that are relevant and related to my own in some way. I guess I just did. If you want to check who Google thinks your neighborhood is, go to Google Search and type in this search text.

related: [yourdomin.com]

Now I know who in my neighborhood I can visit next.

Making New Neighbors

If you’re looking for more links about links and linking you’ll find these worth linking, uh, looking , into:

Got Another Link Post?

Of course, there’s always room for more neighbors to stop by here. So if you have a post on linking add it to the comment section of this post. We could start this massive chain of links to posts on linking–just for the fun of it to see where it goes.

David Sifry Writes about the Future–Janice Myint Please Don’t Read It

February 7, 2006 by Liz

David Sifry posted The State of the Blogosphere–Part 1 at the Technorati Weblog today. This post is research and analysis at its finest. The post is deep, broad, and replete with solid information, graphic visuals, and links to take you even deeper. Anyone who wants to understand the blogosphere should read it.

The information and analysis in this post will serve you in your online business. It will serve you as a student. It will serve you in casual conversation–when a friend wants to discuss the future of the Internet, or when someone tries to tell you all blogs are trashy online diaries.

Just a few notes–a taste–from the summary.

  • Technorati now tracks over 27.2 Million blogs
  • The blogosphere is doubling in size every 5 and a half months
  • It is now over 60 times bigger than it was 3 years ago
  • On average, a new weblog is created every second of every day
  • 13.7 million bloggers are still posting 3 months after their blogs are created
  • Spings (Spam Pings) can sometimes account for as much as 60% of the total daily pings Technorati receives

I sure hope Janice Myint doesn’t read it. Any Customer Service Team Leader at Technorati has enough to worry about. This post could be just overwhelming. Janice we still need you . . . please keep going. (When I went to check the link on this post, I got the “Sorry we are unable to complete your search right now . . .” message. At least now I know why.)

Everyone else go read it. This is stuff you can’t buy at any price and you won’t get in business school. The name of this post is State of the Blogosphere–Part 1. But it tells the future.

Thanks Janice. Keep Going! We’re with You!

February 2, 2006 by Liz

Technorati logo

I sent an email to Janice Myint at Technorati just now. It said thank you for a great start–more movement in 5 minutes than happened in five months. It also said she has the voice of Successful Blog if she needs it.

STANDING OVATION FOR JANICE MYINT!

It’s obvious why they hired you at Technorati, Janice. You like customers–and now we like you too.
It’s a class act that brought you out here to the boondocks twice to reply to our posts. Thank you, Janice, for knowing what Customer Service is about.

Please don’t give up when things get really tough–because they’re going to–stuff up there is really messy. Know that you can hide out here, if you need to and that we’ll help you if we can.

–ME “Liz” Strauss.

PS Still dying to say something about how it took a woman . . . but I’m still the nice one, so I won’t . 🙂

Janice Myint, It didn’t Work Right

February 1, 2006 by Liz

Technorati logo

I sent an email to Janice Myint at Technorati.

In it I included this link Dear Niall Kennedy and David Sifry and a statement that I have three blogs that are not working.

I awoke this morning to a reply it said.

> URL: http://lettingmebe.blogspot.com

That’s indexed fine:
http://technorati.com/search/%22people%20bother%20me%22

>
> Message:

I see last ping at 2006-01-22 18:15:13

forcing a manual respider works – can you check your pinging?

Here I go again.
It seems the drill is check the last post for the URL in the header and pick up one line in the message. No need to actually read it.

I did reply to the sender with a complete list of the problems, but I don’t think that was help enough, consdering the circumstanstances.

I think I also will trackback this post to Ms. Janice Myint’s original post about her arrival. The quest to help Technorati Customer Service improve moves forward.

It’s not an easy job, being the nice one. . . . But someone’s gotta do it.
Everyone so wants Janice to succeed.

On January 30th the Post from Janice Myint said

In its commitment to continually improve its service, Technorati has recently brought me on board as a full time Customer Support Specialist. We are dedicated to addressing the current support issues in a timely manner, reducing the present support backlog, and improving online Troubleshooting and Help documentation to aid users utilize Technorati to its fullest.

The first thing that Ms. Myint is working on will be helping folks who are having trouble claiming a blog, because they are getting the notice “Checking for Technorati Goodness.”
Want to know more? Here’s a link to Ms.Myint’s post.

Good luck, Janice Myint in Customer Service at Technorati. You’ve got your work cut out for you. I guess you could think of it as job security. Sure would be nice of all of the Technorati messy stuff went away.
