Are You Invested Enough to Succeed?

Understanding Return on Investment

SOBCon08 Logo50

The hardest part of building a business is the signal to noise ratio. Every second someone offers something to tilt our sails in another direction. What keeps successful business folks unwavering and always on course? Serious business folks see everything as return on investment.

Invest in a Plan

They say it takes money to make money. Not so. Some folks do it with sweat and charm. But like every well-funded business start-up, the key is that they invest wisely. They’ve thought through a plan to get from point A to point B, and that plan is no pipe dream. The plan is everything.

You need to invest to build a business.

Folks who succeed are invested — in with “both feet.” They put their time and money down, and then they make sure that they get a return. Look at Wendy.

An example: Was going to SxSW a good business decision? I made it so. I put my money down and held my feet to the fire — Mission: get that value back. I pre-arranged meetings, had a plan. Sounds basic, but I talked to plenty of folks who didn’t do that.

I got the return I planned on — more really. An investment outlook changes everything.

Starting a business is a decision, not a “let’s see.” You can’t be “half in” without being “half out.” Who wants to give their important work to someone who’s not fully committed to being there tomorrow?

Are you invested? Do you know where your business will be in three years?

SOBCon08: Business Is Decisions

March 15, 2008 by Liz

The $350 Is Going Away April 1

SOBCon08 logo

Now that the details are set and the wheels are all rolling in the same direction, I’d like to bring you into some decisions as we make them. Later, I’m planning to share how the SoBCon08 came to be as it is and the future we see it unfolding.

We need to put an April 1 end date on the $350 registration fee for the folks who came to SOBCon last year.

The reasoning is simple. We care about the event and the experience deliver. We know what made it awesome last year. We were after the best wifi, a business venue, a location downtown, reasonable hotels, and a way that we might “hang out” close enough together.

We succeeded.

As in last year, our goal for this event has never been to make uber profits, but maybe you should know that every person attending, speaker, sponsor, Terry, me, and all participants cost us $300/head in fees.

Why are we doing it?

  • We know that behind every great business are three things, great people, great tools and models, and solid decisions. Models, masterminds, and mastery is what builds dreams.
  • It’s not for the money. Truth is, though, we’re getting a fabulous deal. We’re just passing the price onto you. (A business markup would put this conference cost at $900+.)
  • We made a decision to built something better than last year and deliver it to you.

You’ve watch exactly how making decisions and getting determined has put my business on concrete. Isn’t it this the year you were going to do the same thing?

Are you up to the challenge?

Drop the Details, Decide

SOBCon I’m there!

Planning a conference is a lot like planning a wedding reception. Everyone thinks, “Oh it doesn’t matter if I RSVP.” But business is about being able to make a decision. We made our decisions. Can you make yours?

Would you invest one day of experts, models, and teamwork to build your business around your strengths, your situation, and where you want to be?

Success is a decision.

  • Register now.Lots of registration perks up.
  • If you’re returning from last year, register by April 1 to take advantage of that great price.
  • If you’re planning to stay in the Club Quarters Hotel or the Hotel 71, book now. The rooms are limited, especially at the Club Quarters. Some folks have already signed up. Rooms are at a premium.

Karen at bestwellnessconsultant [@] gmail [dot]com has volunteered to help coordinate a list of roommates for those who are looking.

Southwest has some great airfares. They also require a decision.

The Specials this Week are

Copyblogger has the story on how we outhink ourselves.
I know what you’re thinking. “Wait a minute, here. We’re talking about people with seriously insightful thoughts! I’m just an average person. I can’t think up great ideas like that!”

The Secret Key to Killer Content:
Taking Time to Think

PR 2.0 has the story on what was the most talked about public event at SxSW.
I’m sure you heard about the infamous Mark Zuckerberg SXSW keynote hosted by well known author, Business Week columnist and Yahoo TechTicker host Sarah Lacy. Just in case you haven’t, let’s just say that some of the audience wasn’t supportive of the casual, conversational format or her style of engaging Zuckerberg in public.

Sarah Lacy on Sarah Lacy and the SXSW Mark Zuckerberg Keynote

45 Things has the story — a whole series starting — on making sure your voice represents you well. And she’s right I do care about it deeply.
Many bloggers have never had these discussions, and that makes sense. The medium has clearly outpaced the ability to discuss all the ramifications of what is written, but it’s time we took a deep breath and did just that.

Managing Your Online Reputation

Small Biz Survival has the story on networks, going viral, and exponentiality.
The reason people say a product or site or blog has gone viral is because when one of these goods/services “takes off” and begins to grow it’s network of users takes on the same growth pattern as the spread of viral diseases, like the flu.

Size Does Matter…The New Economy of Networks and How to Use It for Your Business

David Dalka has the story on SixApart’s quest to win over WordPress users.
Anil Dash has put up quite an intriguing post arguing the case. Matt Mullenweg are you listening?
I’m gonna add a few more reasons to his list of reasons why it would be wise to do so, but before I do that I thought I’d tell Anil why I’m not doing that…YET…

So Anil Dash Wants WordPress Users to Change to Moveable Type…

The Broad Brush has the story on information everywhere, including on pirate sites.
It’s then you find it; there’s a site aggregating your content. A site that is taking your feed and posting it right back onto the front of their homepage. Not just an aggregator clearly showing that you’re a contributor but not related to their company, but an aggregator selling ads on the side.

Aggregation? Aggravation!

Related ala carte selections include

Social Media Explorer has the story on SOBCon08.
I caught up with Liz at South by Southwest (SXSW) to talk about SOBCon2008 in Chicago, May 2-4. Be sure to pay close attention to her description of the format, which is a unique and engaging offering for those in attendance. And the speakers aren’t the only attraction. SOBCon attracts many of the top bloggers in the world as attendees. You can’t come to this thing and not learn a lot about blogging, business and more.

What I Missed at SxSW

March 14, 2008 by Liz

Friends

relationships button

It’s a joy to be able to spend time meeting with folks I know down Austin — Sheila was a gracious and generous host. Becky made sure I toed the line and helped me sort the world. That Chris Brogan is a rock star and personally delivered on of my favorite dinners. Aruni is even more beautiful inside and out. Christina, Shama, and Shashi made a group lunch just by being there.

Still I have to say that I missed talking to everyone I meet here in the morning.

At a meeting on Wednesday, Leah Jones was speaking to a group about the people she knows online and said this, “I’m not going to use quotes. [My friends online] are real friends.

It’s a right choice for me to be “gone” when I’m gone on conference. Otherwise, I find myself torn in too many directions — trying to do too many things. I lose track of where my focus should be.

Conferences come and go. Hopefully, I found some new thoughts to share with you.

What I missed at SxSW was talking to you everyday.

I also missed sleeping with my own pillow.

Thanks for being here to come home to.

The Mic is On: We're Going on a Road Trip!

March 11, 2008 by Liz

It’s Like Open Mic Only Different

The Mic Is On

Here’s how it works.

It’s like any rambling conversation. Don’t try to read it all. Jump in whenever you get here. Just go to the end and start talking. EVERYONE is WELCOME.
The rules are simple — be nice.

There are always first timers and new things to talk about. It’s sort of half “Cheers” part “Friends” and part video game. You don’t know how much fun it is until you try it.

Liz is Out of Town & We’re Going On a Road Trip

Liz is on the road heading home from SXSW tonight.

But never fear she left me the keys to the blog so Open Comment Night is SO on. And while we’re talking it up we’ll be munching on our Klondike Bars and whatever else Liz left us in the side bar.

Bwaaah-ha-ha-ha-ha!

Chris Cree Gravitar

Here are some ideas to get us started

  • Favorite Road Trip Stories
  • Places We’d Most Like to Visit
  • Must-have Road Trip Items
  • Passing the Time on the Road

And, whatever else comes up, including THE EVER POPULAR, Basil the code-writing donkey . . . and did I mention Klondike Bars? (because we always get off topic, anyway.)

Oh, and bring example links to share — especially examples of great road trip destinations!
