Bloggy Question 64: You're In Business Now!

September 23, 2007 by Liz

Opportunity Knocking

For those who come looking for a short, thoughtful read, a blogging life discussion, or a way to gradually ease back into the week. I offer this bloggy life question. . . .

You’ve been writing a blog as a bit of an adventure. You’re not a “make money online” sort of person — mostly because you wouldn’t have a clue how.

Then yesterday you got invited to speak at a conference nest Tuesday in California for some 300 eager attendees. The sponsor of the event has asked you to do the keynote opening talk. The theme of the conference is the theme of your blog.

Suddenly, you realize you have an opportunity to network. People there will listen to what you have to say. You have just enough time to put together some incredible business cards and a great elevator pitch, but no time at all to make your blog look like you do this for a living. Even worse, you’ve been neglecting your blog lately.

Do you leave your as it is and hope for the best, handing out business cards and plan to fix it as soon as you return? Do you pull it off line and put it “under construction”? Do you hand it to a designer and a copywriter who know you, hoping that what they come up with is better than what’s there?

Do you go on vacation instead, figuring you were never meant to do this anyway?

How do you respond?

Bloggy Question 63: Taking It to the Streets

A Store and Traffic

For those who come looking for a short, thoughtful read, a blogging life discussion, or a way to gradually ease back into the week. I offer this bloggy life question. . . .

You’ve gotten this online thing under your belt. You know how to get business online . . . well at least you have a start . . .You’re making a modest income from a product or service that you sell. In the tradtion of things Internet, you’ve decided it’s time to turn the model upside down.

Last night while you were out with friends, a buddy offered you a storefront on the main street near your home. It’s an opportunity to bring your product or service back out into the 3-D world. It certainly has applications there. You already have an online base to support what you might start and your friend, a wealthy guy, has offered rent-free for the first year.

It would mean buying furniture and setting up an office where people can come meet you face to face — some of them folks you have known your whole life. The location is great. The traffic is good. The town could use your service.

What Did You Do in School?

For those who come looking for a short, thoughtful read, a blogging life discussion, or a way to gradually ease back into the week. I offer this bloggy life question. . . .

You’ve invested a lot to send your child to an exclusive, private school. It has the latest facilities and teachers with Masters Degrees in all areas — literacy, art, science, music, math, social sciences, psychology, and tech. Your child, in turn, had to pass several exams to be accepted as a student there.

When you sat down this weekend to go over the school rules and permissions, one notice caught your attention.

It said, “This year, as part of their writing requirements, every student age 6 to 13 will have a weblog. The weblogs will be online at the school’s server. The weblogs will be private to the Internet, but searchable within the school’s online neighborhood. We’re quite excited about this opportunity for our students to enter the 21st century as content producers. In this way, students will understand the connectivity of the modern-day Internet and it’s place in innovation for the future.”

Bloggy Question 59: A Whole New Blog Network?

August 12, 2007 by Liz

According to Daniel Pink . . .

For those who come looking for a short, thoughtful read, a blogging life discussion, or a way to gradually ease back into the week. I offer this bloggy life question. . . .

Congratulations! Consolidated Media has acquired your blog for US$100,000. Better yet, they’ve been paying you the same six figures to write for them for the past six months. Life is good. You’ve enjoyed more money, more traffic, more-engaged readers, and a couple of tasteful ads on your blog. You couldn’t feel better about how things have been going. Well, that was until this morning.

This morning, you received an email quoting Daniel Pink’s book “A Whole New Mind.” Here’s what the email said.

_______

Dear Consolidated Author,
Consolidated Media is pleased to announce a new initiative, “The Whole New Network.” This initiative, based on Daniel Pink’s famous work, “A Whole New Mind,” will move us firmly into the 21st Century. To quote Mr. Pink

“Today, the defining skills of the previous era — the “left brain” capabilities that powered the Information Age — are necessary but no longer sufficient. And the capabilities we once disdained or thought frivolous — the “right-brain” qualities of inventivesnes, empathy, joyfulness, and meaning — increasingly will determine who flourishes and who flounders.”

With these words in mind, Consolidated is setting aside our left-brain, spreadsheet image to support our right-brain thinkers in these ways.

  • Webinars will begin next week on empathy and play as the driving force of business.
  • We’ll be renaming your categories to reflect “high touch” and “high concept” values.
  • We are lifting the posting requirement of 6 posts per week. Post when it’s creatively important.
  • Blog posts that score well for high-emotion keywords relating to empathy, play, and finding meaning will receive a monetary bonus of US$1.00/keyword. You’ll be receiving a list of words that qualify, please feel free to propose others.
  • Most of all have fun!

Thank you for joining our initiative to launch a Whole New Network. Feel free to offer feedback on how we might make this plan more successful.

Sincerely,
Consolidated Media
________

You can see plainly that Consolidated Media has missed Dan Pink’s message — that both left and right brain thinking are needed to be successful in this new age.
