Video Blogging – Try Something New

March 26, 2009 by Guest Author

Do you ever want to try something new with your blog? How about video blogging or vlogging? I’ve been thinking about it for a while. Every time I visit a blog where there are video posts my first reaction is always, “Wow that took courage.” There’s something very inviting, very personal that I like about it. It’s like a welcoming invitation to get to know someone a little better. Not unlike that message on Twitter that turns into a DM, then to an email exchange. And sometimes a phone call and, if you’re lucky, a face-to-face conversation.

The film person in me screams, “You need good lighting, you don’t have the right camera, etc. etc.” The vain part of me screams, “You don’t look on camera – you sound okay, but you look funny.” Truth be told, some people just do look better in front of the camera than others, but I when I settle into watching a good video post, it’s like good writing: I become engaged – I’m listening. Processing and thinking. So, having said that, here are a few hints that will help your video look better:

– First and foremost, be you. Don’t change the way you communicate just because there’s a camera on. For instance, if you need to laugh, use your hands when you talk, use a certain turn of phrase, do it. Be you.

– Think background – it matters. Point your camera at where you’ll be talking from, then stand behind the camera and have a look. It’s called setting the frame. Anything distracting there? It could be as simple as a picture on the wall, bulletin board with something flashy pinned on it, a mirror (always a definite no) or anything that causes your eye to drift from where you’ll be talking.

– Think lighting – it matters. If you’re using natural light streaming in from outside, uncover all those windows and let in as much as you can. Shoot a little test and see how it looks. You may have to change to get the best positioning for the optimum lighting advantage — lighting that makes you look good. If you need to add light, move some lamps, etc. around to get the best effect. Lighting from behind usually does not look the best. Light your face from the front, point a lamp at your face from beside the camera or on the floor in front of you. Move things around, experiment and play with it – have fun.

–Think sound – You really do need to have it quiet when you record. You can have a bad background and poor quality lighting and still have an ok post. If you have poor quality sound you have nothing. Viewers automatically disengage when they can’t hear. You can look like a rockstar but if they can’t hear you it doesn’t count for anything!

– Think timing – Most people watch videos that are between 3:00 and 4:00 long. After that, unless you’re giving an informational talk or doing an exercise video you lose people’s attention, sad, but it’s true. Think about a regular post you would write and how long it would take to read it. Maybe you’re doing a vlog as something special or just for fun. Stick to what you’re hoping to convey.

– Think articulation – If you’re nervous, you may have a tendency to rush your speech. Think about being clear and delivering your words effectively so others can make them out. This doesn’t mean drone on in a monotone. It just refers to being aware of how you are talking. Sometimes when speaking in public or on camera it’s helpful to think of reading a story to a child out loud . It helps to slow you down a bit.

Last but not least, have fun!

Have you tried a video blog? If you have, please leave a link — I’d love to check it out. I need inspiration too! If you haven’t, what’s stopping you?

What to do if people are messing with your brand online

March 26, 2009 by SOBCon Authors

For your resources tag on delicious, some info on Reputation Management/Monitoring:
‘Smoking Smarties’ Videos Create Blaze of Unwelcome PR – Advertising Age – News

1. Don’t fight it. Trying to cajole, warn, threaten or even sue someone who is misusing your product or making a joke will only come off as heavy-handed. “Maybe some Neanderthal thinks that they can control this, but the reality is no one can,” said Pete Blackshaw, exec VP of Nielsen Online Digital Strategic Services. And antagonistic attitudes will only invite more criticism and mocking.
2. Survey the extent of the problem. Is it a small group of jokers no one will take seriously or a more reputable group? How damaging is what they’re saying or doing? That is, are they completing maligning the product and associating it with extremely unsavory behavior? Or is it just goofing around?
3. Turn to your social-media crisis plan. And if you don’t have one yet, develop one.
4. Be open with employees. They use social media too and likely already know about it. But make sure to discuss what’s happening and give them the information you want conveyed (for instance, what to say if a friend asks at a party, “Hey, what’s up with all these kids smoking Smarties?”).
5. Respond accordingly. At the very least, have a prepared statement for any media calls. Make sure it is available to all senior executives who may be queried. And make sure to respond as quickly and as transparently as possible to any direct questions from your customers.

Crowdsourcing at SOBCon

March 25, 2009 by SOBCon Authors

Here is a short video that has a little more information on the crowdsourcing project that I mentioned previously. It is a group-sketchnotes project based on Mike Rohde’s sketchnotes from SXSW.

Please share your thoughts in the Comments.

How to Break Out of the Appealing Black Hole of Self-Doubt

March 25, 2009 by Liz

It’s Hard to Shine in a Black Hole

I like sky. It gives me perspective. I think of the stars and how even the tiniest of them shines. It’s their nature to do that. They don’t worry or question whether the star to them is brighter, bigger, or doing something they should be doing.

It’s true. We’re made of the same stuff as stars.

When we’re true to ourselves, we shine like the stars do. We’re focused. We move with what’s inside and what’s true.

When we’re too involved in what folks are thinking and doing, it throws us off. Trying to keep up with other folks thoughts and feelings is impossible and overwhelming. It skews us. It changes our vision. We see inconsequential actions as huge events.

We put the “self” in self doubt.
That throws our whole universe into chaos.

You see, the universe isn’t meant to revolve around us.

The Black Hole

The black hole — a negative funk and flat out of energy.

We’re riding high, making dreams, and seeing the future bend to our wishes. Then something changes things. We lose a job, leave a lover, get sick, get scared, or work our way into mess and can’t find our way out. We’re disconnected from everything, including ourselves.

We try to reason, but we argue for why we’re stuck. We can name every part of the problem that’s outside of us. We close our eyes to anything that will help. We make the black hole even darker.

It’s hard to shine in a black hole.

What Makes Staying in a Black Hole So Appealing?

I know. I’ve been there. Here’s what I know –> Getting out can seem hard. Staying can seem safe. Yet, as comfortable as holing away can be — black holes don’t let the light in.

Hiding in a black hole of self-doubt, has its appeal. Black holes keep us from facing these challenges and realities …

that folks might discount the dimensions of our devastation.
that we own part of the situation.
that we have control to change things.
that we’ll have to let people watch us learning.
we have to lay down our pain, our embarassment, and give again.

Ben Franklin said, “Things that hurt, instruct.”

And people and stars are made of the same stuff.

But hanging in black hole is stressful, boring, and unattractive. It makes us negative and unhappy. When we’re unhappy enough, those challenges won’t be such a burden. We’ll blast out all at once, because we’re hungry for direction, energy, and hope.

Blasting out of a black hole is a decision. Here’s how to execute once you find a black hole of self-doubt isn’t a place worth being.

  1. Open your eyes and tell yourself off. Let the light in. You get to decide how happy you’ll be. Own your life.

  2. Do something for someone. Be generous. Get out of the center of your universe and back into orbit. You’ll lighten up.

  3. Make promises to the person you are AND keep them. Prove your integrity to yourself. Everyone else will see that shine through.

  4. Find out what other folks can teach you. Learn why someone cares about something you find insignificant. Learn how to say what you feel.

  5. Change your mind. Quit problem thinking. Argue for solutions. Align your goals with the the people you trust.

  6. Listen with your whole being. Listen for what people are not saying. Listen to what your actions are saying. Learn to laugh when you hear yourself whine.

  7. Make a small child smile. You were a child once. You know how.

A wise person once told me that change is the only constant. If we know nothing lasts we don’t attach too tightly. We value ideas and people. When we shine, it lets others know they can shine too.

Shine like the star you are. We need your light.

How do you shine your way out of self-doubt?

Crowdsourcing the SOBCon Secret Project

March 24, 2009 by SOBCon Authors

I have been looking at this for hours:

Mike Rodhe made these sketchnotes at SXSW last week and they are fantastic. I have been thinking about doing something like this for SOBCon because I am a big notebook freak. But I can’t draw so well…

So I am going to ask you all to help with this little project. On Sunday the Lovely Bride TM and I went to Boston for a trade show and I stopped by the Levenger store to pick up some supplies for this “secret project“. I am looking forward to seeing what the attendees put together.

If you have any ideas on how to make this better, please let me know (contact form).

The Mic Is On and We're Talking E-Books

March 24, 2009 by Liz

It’s Like Open Mic Only Different

The Mic Is On

Here’s how it works.

It’s like any rambling conversation. Don’t try to read it all. Jump in whenever you get here. Just go to the end and start talking. EVERYONE is WELCOME.
The rules are simple — be nice.

There are always first timers and new things to talk about. It’s sort of half “Cheers” part “Friends” and part video game. You don’t know how much fun it is until you try it.

. . .

An ebook can be more important than resume in defining your career and your business. Tonight we’ll explore what it takes to get one done and out there.

  • What should you write about?
  • How long should an ebook be?
  • Where do you sell it?
  • What can you expect?

And, whatever else comes up, including THE EVER POPULAR, Basil the code-writing donkey . . . and flamenco dancing (because we always get off topic, anyway.)

Oh, and bring example links.
