Bloggy Question 65: You've Always Had It EASY! RIGHT?!!!

September 30, 2007 by Liz

Opportunity Knocking

For those who come looking for a short, thoughtful read, a blogging life discussion, or a way to gradually ease back into the week. I offer this bloggy life question. . . .

You moved away from your hometown after college. Only 20% of your graduating class did. You’re online and you have your own business. You’re enjoying some success — every bit of which you’ve worked your tail off to achieve.

You return home for a reunion. Always thinking, you arrange a few meetings with possible new clients while you’re there. When a high school friend hears you’re coming, he asks whether he might hire you to give him some advice on a new venture he’s considering. You agree (at a slight discount for secrets shared and times spent.)

The day of that meeting arrives.

The guy has a grand idea that actually has potential. It could turn into something special. He’s identified a genuine need. You’re certain because it’s in your same industry. You start thinking it would make a nice “sister” business. You’re picturing clients you might refer for his service.

Then you ask a few questions and the situation gets sticky.

The problem is that your friend is in dreamland. He has no real plan. He wants to put out a shingle and expects customers by the hundreds (maybe thousands), all over the nation to lay their trust and their money down. He has no goals, no funding, no market projection, and no way to get his message out or a message to send.

When you gently try to explain this reality, his answer is “You’ve always had it easy! You’re afraid of a little competition.”

Now you’ve invested billable time in a bad situation and you have a client meeting in the morning with someone he knows.

How do you respond?

Bloggy Question 64: You're In Business Now!

Opportunity Knocking

For those who come looking for a short, thoughtful read, a blogging life discussion, or a way to gradually ease back into the week. I offer this bloggy life question. . . .

You’ve been writing a blog as a bit of an adventure. You’re not a “make money online” sort of person — mostly because you wouldn’t have a clue how.

Then yesterday you got invited to speak at a conference nest Tuesday in California for some 300 eager attendees. The sponsor of the event has asked you to do the keynote opening talk. The theme of the conference is the theme of your blog.

Suddenly, you realize you have an opportunity to network. People there will listen to what you have to say. You have just enough time to put together some incredible business cards and a great elevator pitch, but no time at all to make your blog look like you do this for a living. Even worse, you’ve been neglecting your blog lately.

Do you leave your as it is and hope for the best, handing out business cards and plan to fix it as soon as you return? Do you pull it off line and put it “under construction”? Do you hand it to a designer and a copywriter who know you, hoping that what they come up with is better than what’s there?

Do you go on vacation instead, figuring you were never meant to do this anyway?

How do you respond?

A Store and Traffic

For those who come looking for a short, thoughtful read, a blogging life discussion, or a way to gradually ease back into the week. I offer this bloggy life question. . . .

You’ve gotten this online thing under your belt. You know how to get business online . . . well at least you have a start . . .You’re making a modest income from a product or service that you sell. In the tradtion of things Internet, you’ve decided it’s time to turn the model upside down.

Last night while you were out with friends, a buddy offered you a storefront on the main street near your home. It’s an opportunity to bring your product or service back out into the 3-D world. It certainly has applications there. You already have an online base to support what you might start and your friend, a wealthy guy, has offered rent-free for the first year.

It would mean buying furniture and setting up an office where people can come meet you face to face — some of them folks you have known your whole life. The location is great. The traffic is good. The town could use your service.

It’s a Thursday night. What fabulous story would you tell if we had a glass of wine, some chocolate, and this view out our window?

What Did You Do in School?

For those who come looking for a short, thoughtful read, a blogging life discussion, or a way to gradually ease back into the week. I offer this bloggy life question. . . .

You’ve invested a lot to send your child to an exclusive, private school. It has the latest facilities and teachers with Masters Degrees in all areas — literacy, art, science, music, math, social sciences, psychology, and tech. Your child, in turn, had to pass several exams to be accepted as a student there.

When you sat down this weekend to go over the school rules and permissions, one notice caught your attention.

It said, “This year, as part of their writing requirements, every student age 6 to 13 will have a weblog. The weblogs will be online at the school’s server. The weblogs will be private to the Internet, but searchable within the school’s online neighborhood. We’re quite excited about this opportunity for our students to enter the 21st century as content producers. In this way, students will understand the connectivity of the modern-day Internet and it’s place in innovation for the future.”
