What Robert Hruzek Said … About Selfless Givers

December 20, 2008 by Liz

A community isn’t built or befriended,
it’s connected by offering and accepting.
Community is affinity, identity, and kinship
that make room for ideas, thoughts, and solutions.
Wherever a community gathers, we aspire and inspire each other intentionally . . . And our words shine with authenticity.

Giving or Giving Ourselves Away

They say “givers get,” but some just give and give and get taken advantage of. Some never say “no” or “stop.” How do you tell them apart? How do you know which one you are?

Here’s what Robert said . . .

I’d have to say the difference is one’s attitude! One who is giving it all away due to a lack of self-worth would probably have an attitude problem that can be seen a mile away.

It’s sortof like (warning! methaphor alert!) the difference between a sand castle – and a shining city on a hill (which is how I think of you and “Successful-Blog”).

I think the truly selfless people stand out in such a way that anyone can, and will, find their way there.

The Generosity Connection that Lifts Us Higher

December 16, 2008 by Liz

Community Raises People Up

At any moment, most of us are doing fine, but a few are feeling the hill’s too high or the burden’s too heavy. So those who can reach out to those who’ve lost the spirit.

At times like that, generous folks reach out to show us how to push through and climb up. It’s hard to know which reach will make a difference.
People get back on track and move forward, keeping their eye on the goal.
Sometimes on the way to that goal people get impatient, feel deprived, or forget the folks who helped.

Then someone generous of spirit stops long enough to say something like this

I wouldn’t have pushed through if you had not been there.

It’s a gift to hear that.

The generosity connection lifts us higher.

Tell someone …
you’re there to help.

Thank someone …
who’s been there for you.

I love you all.

Beach Notes: Do You Acknowledge Your Greatness?

December 14, 2008 by Guest Author

by Guest Writer Suzie Cheel

Last Friday in a strategy session I was asked what it was that people saw in me that would have them want to work and engage with me. I was stumped.

While we were walking on the beach I discussed this with Des.I said I know that people find me helpful and inspiring. I have written and illustrated a book emergings – a meditation on the emotions of change, which Liz launched for me at Blog World Expo, and which is inspiring people. I have received many words of praise.

Why is it hard for me to acknowledge this? Des asked whether there was some social conditioning at work? I think that could be right.

Many of us have been conditioned from an early age not to think too highly of ourselves. I am no exception. I am just surprised that after all these years I stil have to work on this. A work in progress.

Looking at myself,

sometimes realize

I don’t see in me

the gifts and talents

the way others do !

Do you see in yourself what others see?

This is Liz’s special page from the book, you can see Liz claiming this in the launch video

Suzie will be doing a special Xmas launch of emergings as an e-book on Tuesday.

Beach Notes: Waiting for a Wave

December 7, 2008 by Guest Author

by Guest Writer Des Walsh

At the southern end of Rainbow Bay beach, where we walk most mornings, is the world famous Snapper Rocks surfing break. Usually, and on any day of the week, there are plenty of surfers to be seen there. Sometimes most or all of them stay away, whether because the surf is too choppy or, as in the photo here, it is just flat.

But even when it is flat there are likely to be a few hopefuls, waiting for waves that, for all the casual observer can discern, are just not around at that time.

Looking at the picture this morning or three surfers waiting for a wave with none in evidence, I’m thinking that part of me actually likes the idea of people being hopeful, whether of a wave to make my surfing day, or some new business coming out of the blue and making my annual income look much healthier. I’m basically a perennial optimist.

Then my brain kicks in and suggests that if I don’t do more than wait and hope, I’ll be like Charles Dickens’ Mr Micawber, a man who owed much and earned less, and who lived in hope that something would “turn up”.

And in the business context, given the parlous state of the global economy, it’s probably even more foolhardy than usual to be just living in hope of growth, or even survival. It might be boom times for receivers and administrators. For the rest of us it’s a time to get really focused and take systematic action. Indeed, 2009 looks like being a year to test us all.

Something might well turn up, but just hoping for that is probably a recipe for tears before bedtime.

What’s your tip for a way to ensure good business in 2009?

Beach Notes: Letting Go

November 30, 2008 by Guest Author

To move forward I know I need to let go of both physical and emotional stuff.

Tomorrow we have a council collection, so today we have spent a couple of hours cleaning out the garage and clearing out accumulated things I might use one day.

Des just commented how amazingly tidy the garage looked.

I located a few journals tucked away in boxes from a few years ago and found a poem I had written about letting go.

Mirrors of the Soul

Are you just being a mirror

for me and my soul?

There is a big leap

to make from the

known and familiar

There is the letting go

of ” who I think I am” to

“the who I know I will become”

But the freedom it will bring

will drive me on

I must let go

I must listen to my soul

– Suzie Cheel 21/11/99

I know as I continue to let go I will create more space for the new to flow in.

Are there times when you find it easier to let go?

What Mark Goodyear Said … About Blogging for Others

November 26, 2008 by Liz

A community isn’t built or befriended,
it’s connected by offering and accepting.
Community is affinity, identity, and kinship
that make room for ideas, thoughts, and solutions.
Wherever a community gathers, we aspire and inspire each other intentionally . . . And our words shine with authenticity.

Blogging and Community

When we write our first blog post, we write for expression. We’ve something to say and we put it out there. Sometime along the way, people come to read what we’re writing — one person, many. Our blog turns from a website into a place where minds meet. How often do we consider the power of that?

Here’s what Mark said . . .

People want to do something meaningful. That is so true.

That’s why I love your site. You remind bloggers that this is only meaningful when we create in community. What we say must have a direct, positive affect on another person–or else we’re just stroking our own egos by building online archives of meaningless content.

Sure, we can pretend we’re writing for posterity. And we can overly fixated on a need for seeing with our own eyes how our work helps others.

But the central point remains. We are honest with others to encourage them to be honest. We give ourselves away to encourage others to give themselves away.

If everyone in the world did that, what a wonderful place it would be!
