7 Incredibly Intelligent Ideas for Blogging More Efficiently

December 21, 2007 by Liz

Be a Power Blogger

This week, b5 business bloggers were discussing ways to bring more value to our readers. The question was barely asked when Eric Eggertson offered an answer on how to blog with power and more efficiently.

Eric Eggertson knows a bit about where he comes from. He’s been involved in corporate communications since 1987. He’s conceived and executed internal and external communication strategies for government agencies, non-profits and co-operatives in Saskatchewan. He blogs about public relations and has been doing so since January 2005 on the Common Sense PR blog for b5 media.

Eric Eggertson of Common Sense PR

As soon as I read Eric’s email, I asked if I might use his email as a blog post. I thought what he had to say should be published. He graciously agreed.

“Be my guest, Liz!” is what Eric said.

So I give it to you raw and unplugged, like the value content that it is. By the way, Eric didn’t name this post I did. I think his ideas truly are incredibly intelligent and I’m hoping you’ll put them to use right away.

7 Incredibly Intelligent Ideas for Blogging More Efficiently

by Eric Eggertson

  1. When there’s a lot of discussion in the comments of a post, or if there’s some critical info added in the comments, create a short post quoting the most relevant info and pointing people to the contents of the prior post. This isn’t cheating. It actually really helps people who subscribe via e-mail or RSS, as they may not be aware of what’s being said in the comments.
  2. When someone writes about something you’ve posted, and their post adds something significant to understanding the issue, create a short post quoting briefly and pointing people to the other blogger’s post. This helps people who don’t see the Trackbacks and Pingbacks to your post (ie. RSS/e-mail subscribers).
  3. Create a short post linking to the top posts for your blog, or the most controversial, or the ones you sweated over that everyone ignored, or links to all parts of a series.
  4. When you write a guest post on another blog/site, create a short post linking to the post. Even if the item’s a bit off topic for your blog, this may be worth doing if you want people to get to know you a bit better.
  5. Break bigger pieces into smaller ones and spread them out over a few days. Use the first one to introduce the topic and solicit responses, then post the others, including any reader feedback.
  6. Ask readers for suggestions for further reading/best tools/best tips/weirdest news, etc., then post the results as link lists. You can do a separate post per topic. This isn’t cheating. Some of the best items on some blogs are short links to other sources, without a lengthy explanation of all the background about it.
  7. When you see something that is striking, unusual, awful, humorous, etc., post a short item about it, without feeling you have to find a weighty rationale for pointing it out. Think of it as the equivalent of a little item tucked in the margin of a magazine or a book – 15-30 words about it.

Seven incredibly intelligent ideas to make your work worth more to your readers, and at the same time make your life easier. What more value could a blogger or a reader need for the holidays?

How many of these will you be using before the year is over?

Thanks Eric, for letting me share these with the folks who read Successful-Blog!

Personal Identity: Fear of Imposing or Fear of Beholding?

December 21, 2007 by Liz

Asking for Help

Personal Identity logo

I’m looking at myself and looking my business.
I’m looking at what I have done well in the past.

I’ve been reading recently fabulous articles for big and small business folks. The great ones say to . . . be prepared, be ready, and get in the habit of asking for help at every step. For years, they’ve even given advice on how to ask. So have I. So have my friends and colleagues.

the big things they say are “Don’t be afraid to ask.” and “Think about what you hear.”

Just the other night the wisest and best-suited business advisor I know said to me, “I want to help you. How can I help?”

I sit here with the questions, and they seem too much and too many to ask.

Here I am trusting the world with my thoughts . . . and I can’t ask a simple question, not even the first one. Well I guess the first is the hardest.

Where does this issue of trust come from?

Is it a fear of imposing or a fear of beholding?

I know which it is in my case. Note my comment below.

Do you know which it is when you want to ask for help, but don’t?

Thank you,

Success Can Come Right Out of Nowhere

December 20, 2007 by Liz

Next in the the b5media Business Apprentice Team Challenge . . . This week’s challenge? Everybody loves a success story. New business owners find them inspiring. Tell Kay a success story that inspired you – it could be a famous person, a company, a family member.-

Some Successes Only Look that Way Later

Can you imagine?

A singer songwriter David LaMotte, had to cancel a weekend of shows. He asked a friend, a young writer, singer, aspiring performer — who was working as a waitress — if she would fill in for him. Filled with anxiety, she agreed.

The young singer pulled together what courage she could muster to sing her way through songs other people wrote. All the while, she sang around her fear and did her best to disregard her self-doubt.

Thoroughly exhausted, the young singer was stopped at the end of a set. There before her was an actor from a traveling theater production. He was amazed to hear this was her first performance in a club. The actor reached in his pocket to hand her a $100 bill with the words, “never give up.”

And we know her. She’s a wonderful writer, songwriter, and singer. It’s five CDS later. I’m proud to call her a friend. Her name is in my sidebar and has been for almost two years.

“It was an endorsement from the angels,” Christine Kane said about that night when she was handed that $100. Sometimes you don’t see your own success coming.

It makes me smile to think that one of my favorite lines from her songs is a lot the same.

When courage finally comes you never see it coming.

I wonder that night is what the song was about.

You decide.

Right Outta Nowhere the words and the song are waiting behind that link.

Sort of makes me feel like a success just listening to her sing.

Traveling on the Living Web: Which Line Do You Take?

December 19, 2007 by Liz

A Bicycle or a Subway?

The Living Web

A few months ago, I was inspired by a conversation with Doc Searls to write a piece for the Blog Herald. I wrote about the two Internets in which we live — the one of information and the one of relationships.

A few months later, Doc quoted a discussion at IS2K7 at the Harvard Law School.

We’re building a new bicycle while we’re riding it here.

That metaphor explains beautifully what we do every day.

Recently, I encountered this visual that shows the 200 top sites on the Internet as of last summer.
You might enjoy seeing how to get around this new civilization we’re creating. Thank you, Michael’s Blog, for finding it. Click to go to the source at information architects.

Web Trend Map

This place we meet every day . . .

It’s our thoughts; it’s our dreams; it’s our reality shared in a virtual space.
It’s our business to know how it works. It’s the bicycle, or the subway, that we’re buidling while we’re riding it here. It’s time to start exploring the Living Web.

On which line do you spend more your time?

Personal Identity: What's Your Mini-Intro?

December 19, 2007 by Liz

What Would I Say? What Would You Say?

relationships button

It was my second or third trip to Brighton, England. Richard, Stephen and I were sitting at lunch, discussing business. Stephen is a friend and publishing partner I had met many times. We were discussing who would be at an upcoming book fair.

I described a person I thought Stephen would enjoy meeting.

The conversation changed course when Stephen said, “So, what’s my mini-bio?”

I tilted my head with a look and asked, “What do you mean?”

He replied, “From the minute I met you, every time you mention a person I don’t know you give a mini-intro. I’m wondering what you use for mine?”

I answered with the qualities that struck me as most him. “You’re, Stephen, proper, poised, and the most positive-natured editor I know.”

This morning, I woke up thinking about those mini-intros. I need a good “hello” for some folks I’m meeting this afternoon.

I was thinking it might be fun to introduce each other and to ourselves.
I’ll go first. My answer is in the comment box.

Introduce yourself and introduce a friend too.

The Mic is On: We're Talking About Blogs and Blog Friends 2007!!

December 18, 2007 by Liz

It’s Like Open Mic Only Different

The Mic Is On

Here’s how it works.

It’s like any rambling conversation. Don’t try to read it all. Jump in whenever you get here. Just go to the end and start talking. EVERYONE is WELCOME.
The rules are simple — be nice.

There are always first timers and new things to talk about. It’s sort of half “Cheers” part “Friends” and part video game. You don’t know how much fun it is until you try it.

…Blogs and Blog Friends in 2007!

We might talk about:

  • Bloggers we met in person
  • Bloggers we met on the phone
  • Bloggers we met on their blog for the first time
  • Blog posts and blogs that changed how we thought
blogs…

And, whatever else comes up, including THE EVER POPULAR, Basil the code-writing donkey . . . and flamenco dancing (because we always get off topic, anyway.)

Oh, and bring links about blogs bloggers to share!
