Is Your Past Keeping You from Your Future?

June 30, 2017 by Thomas 1 Comment

binoculars-1209011_640When you are looking for a new job or even trying to hold on to the one you have, should you have worries about your past?

For some, skeletons in their closet can end up being much more damaging than they first may think. As a result, they end up not getting the job they want. In fact, their career goals may disappear because of their past.

Given today’s digital age, it is easier than ever for people to run into trouble due to the Internet. If someone digging on you finds some information they don’t like, will they use it against you?

To do your best to avoid any major roadblocks in your career, try and see what people are saying about you.

Knowing What is in Your Record?

When you are thinking about pursuing a new job or even maintaining the one you have, don’t let your past stand in the way.

To know what others may have discovered about you, the time may be now for performing a background check.

By doing such a check, you can see if one or more things are hindering you from getting where you want to be in your career.

Have you ever considered doing a license plate search? If not, doing one may surprise you.

A few unpaid tickets in your past could come back to haunt you in more ways than one. Not only may authorities be seeking you, but what if you apply for a job that involves driving a company vehicle? If you have one or more unpaid traffic tickets, they could keep you from getting that position.

Even if a background check or license plate search doesn’t show any gaffes, take stock moving forward. You may have been setting yourself up for trouble and not even realizing it.

So, what are some things that could be preventing you from moving forth with your career? Among them:

  • Attitude – Do you have a negative attitude towards work and co-workers? Although you may not admit to this, it may very well be the one thing holding you back. If it is, better to change it now and not regret it later. Although you do not have to be a cheerleader at work, you should take each day as a chance to improve you and the company.
  • Effort – While no one expects you to work 80 hours a week, do you have trouble making it even through 40 hours? If so, it can end up reflecting in a bad way on your performance. In some cases, employees must go that extra mile because a project needs to get done for a client or clients. As such, it is important that you are willing to roll up your sleeves and work whatever is necessary. In doing so, you will oftentimes catch the eye of your employer too.
  • Goals – Although employees should not use any job as a stepping stone to the next one, many do. That said having career goals is critical to your ability to succeed. As an example, don’t come across as someone who thinks they know it all. Face it; even employees in the workforce for decades are still learning on a daily basis. This is especially the case given the ever-changing role of technology at many jobs. Always make it your goal to improve your skills year after year.

In looking to secure your future, make sure your past doesn’t end up holding you back.

Get Your Career Back on Track after a Serious Incident

May 6, 2017 by Thomas Leave a Comment

car-wreck-1618179_640For many workers all across the nation, their jobs are their lifelines.
Stop for a moment and think about where you would be if you were not working.
Among the factors to consider:

  • Money – How would you support yourself without a regular job? For most people, the answer is they would not be able to. Even if they are in a low paying job or jobs, that works keeps them off the streets.
  • Career – Any significant breaks in your working life can lead to more problems. Many employers will avoid individuals who have sizable gaps on their resumes. As a result, it can be hard to get back into the working field.
  • Trouble – Without a regular work routine, would you end up getting into trouble? For some folks, too much free time on their hands can be trouble.

For you to avoid your career get sidetracked, you need to see that your work life stays together.

That said a serious incident in your life can derail your career at the snap of a finger.

If that happens, will you be able to rebound?

What Kind of Events Can Derail You?

Among the types of serious incidents in life that can derail your work life:

  1. Accident

If you’re hurt rather seriously in an accident, the ripple effects can be tough to overcome.

You are trying to get your physical and mental health back, two tasks that can be difficult to achieve.

Making matters worse is when the accident wasn’t even your fault.

For instance, did the driver who injured you get away?

Unfortunately, hit-and-run accidents are all too common nationwide.

If there is no police report, you already are behind the eight ball. Were there any eyewitnesses or video evidence? Again, if you can’t find either, where do you turn for help?

If you were able to catch the vehicle plate of the hit-and-run driver, you at least have something to work with.

License plate searches following a vehicle accident can help you out. In finding the other driver, police can look for damage to their vehicle. They may have also sought medical attention right after the accident.

Even though it may seem at first like a long-shot, be sure you exhaust all your options.

Not only has someone hurt you and, they may have put your career on hold for a significant amount of time.

  1. Illness

A serious illness is another obstacle you might need to overcome to get back to work.

Examples of this can include treatments for cancer and other life-threatening diseases.

While many employers will work with employees, some may choose otherwise.

If you find yourself dealing with that latter, you may have to fight for your job through the legal system.

As if the physical suffering from cancer isn’t bad enough, now you’re dealing with the mental stress too.

The best thing you can do is focus on your health.

Yes, your ability to work is important, but how can you do a good job if your health is far from what it should be?

If you do get a serious cancer diagnosis, take time to sit down with your employer and discuss your options.

By being upfront, there’s a good chance you two can come to an understanding to benefit both parties.

  1. Death

Losing a loved one can be one of the hardest things many people deal with on a regular basis.

Not only is there the physical loss of having that person in your life, but also the emotional fallout.

Any point in the day can remind you of that person. When that occurs, the thoughts are happy ones. Even when they are, yet, it can give you a sense of grief and loss.

Although some people are able to immerse themselves in their jobs to dull the pain, many others can’t.

If you are having trouble focusing on or even going to work after the death of a loved one, don’t be afraid to seek help.

By getting things off your chest, you can bring some comfort to the situation.

Sure, you will likely never get over losing that individual.

That said you will be able to get back some semblance of normalcy in your life, including in the workplace.

Securing the Needed Education to Finance the Right Career

November 11, 2016 by Thomas Leave a Comment

leave-364178_640If you take a moment to look at where your career is currently headed, are you happy with what you see?

For many individuals, today’s job challenges are not always so much tied to employers not offering them. In fact, it is oftentimes a case of not having the necessary qualifications to meet the needs of companies.

Although some individuals will have each and every qualification needed, they will still be turned down. In the end, the majority do find work when properly qualified.

With that in mind, what are you doing to be as sure as possible that you will get the career you want and deserve?

Are You Properly Qualified?

So that you have all the qualifications deemed necessary to get the job and ultimately career you want, make sure the following are checked off:

  • Attitude – First and foremost, do you have the right attitude when it comes to the job search? Unfortunately, some individuals go into a job hunt feeling like they are all but entitled to a position. In the real world, however, that attitude won’t get one too far. When you have the attitude that exudes positivism, you stand a much better chance of being where you want. Take it from the approach of things work out for a reason, but you’re going to stay positive no matter what;
  • Education – When it comes to your educational background, are you as educated as is deemed necessary? Whether looking for an accounting degree, acquiring an online master of science in finance degree, perhaps a communications degree, be sure to get what you need. Although hands-on training goes a long way in whether or not you get the position you seek, your educational background certainly can’t be discounted;
  • Skills – As you look at the skills you currently possess, are they enough to get you in the door for the interview of your choice (see more below)? In an ever-changing world, recent skills can prove outdated in a short period of time, so never assume what you have is enough. Also take the time to look at your overall social skills, notably as to how you act online and offline. When it comes to the former, more and more employers are looking at prospective candidates (along with current employees), checking to see what they say and do on social media. It would definitely behoove you to be as professional and cautious as possible. Never lash out socially about a current or former employer or co-worker.

Positive Personality is Always Worthwhile

  • Personality – Whether it is in the workplace or outside of it, a positive personality should always be by your side. In the workplace, customer service is always a focal point, something that can determine how successful (or not for that matter) a business can be. If you are in a current job or interviewing for one (perhaps both), make sure your personality comes across as positive. As for outside the workplace, being personable pays dividends too. Always keep in mind that you never truly know who you are talking to at many times in your life. As a result, a general discussion in a coffee shop, restaurant, doctor’s office etc. could in fact be with someone you will refer to as your boss one day;
  • Goals – Finally, for both your sake and the sake of any employer you work for, having goals is crucial. Yes, some employees just go through the motions in the workplace on a daily basis. For whatever reason or reasons that is, it really doesn’t help anyone, notably the worker. By being ambitious and looking to accomplish more in life in terms of your profession, you will stand out in a positive way for all to see.

If you feel like something is missing in your career i.e. enough education, the right position to grow in etc. will you do something about it today?

Engineer a Better Career Approach Moving Forward

November 7, 2015 by Thomas Leave a Comment

How to Get Ahead words on a board game advance your career
How to Get Ahead words on a board game advance your careerWhat is your career approach?

Whether you want to be an engineer or a CEO, a nurse or a big data scientist, the right approach to your career will give you a valuable boost.

What are some things you can do to keep a positive attitude and make sure you have the best approach to your career?

Make Your Career Your Business

It is all too easy to drift along, even in a career you’re successful at. That’s why you need to make your career your business.

Make time for a career review; ask yourself where you would like to be in five or 10 years. What would you like to achieve before you retire? Once you know where you want to be, map out a plan of how to get there, and regularly review where you are.

Think about your talents, motivations and likes.

If your career is the right one for you, how can you use your skills to make it even more rewarding? If it’s not, ask yourself what you would like to do instead, and how you can use your existing skills in a new way.

Keep Learning

One of the keys to engineering a better career for yourself, is learning. Keep abreast of what’s hot in your industry from new technology to new ideas.

Be willing to invest in your education (sometimes employers will be able to help you with this). Continuous learning will keep your skills up to date, making you more valuable to an employer, and helping you get more satisfaction from what you do.

If you want to move in a different direction, learn as much as you can about your intended career so you can figure out if it’s right for you.

Make the Most of Mornings

Making the most of mornings can help you advance your career.

The morning provides prime quiet time, before the rush of work, family commitments and deadlines. As the article “Boost Your Engineering Career” says, you can use that time for making plans, motivating yourself, and starting your day with a goal in mind.

Time spent in the morning planning your day is a good career booster.

Start every morning with a clear plan of what you want to achieve, and which tasks are most important to that end. You’ll be taking charge of every day and making sure you use your time in the best way possible.

Look For Opportunities

If you want to forge the best career path for you, keep your eye out for opportunities. Having a positive attitude and being willing to seize opportunity will help you move forward.

Be proactive in looking for chances to boost your career.

That might mean taking a new course, attending an event, or simply connecting with the right person. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, make suggestions and start conversations. You never know what might come of it.

If you want to go in a new direction, look for chances to learn and grow on your new path.

Don’t wait for the perfect training course, for example. Read books, talk to other people in your desired industry, or even look for ways you can volunteer to find out what it’s all about.

Being in a career that you love is fulfilling and rewarding.

Make sure that’s the case for you with a positive attitude, great time management, and a nose for opportunities.

Did You Make it Your Business to Get the Right Degree?

November 19, 2014 by Thomas Leave a Comment

agraddWhether you are planning to go into business for yourself now or maybe down the road, the right business degree can make all the difference in terms of success or failure.

In a day and age when the economies of a number of countries are on shaky ground, having a solid business degree behind you enhances the chances of getting a good job, perhaps one day being your own boss.

The biggest challenge for some is deciding just where to go for that degree. Should they look for a quick two-year degree at a community or junior college, should they go to a four-year school or should they opt for a college or university specifically geared towards the business world?

Once that decision is made, the key then becomes focusing in on a generic or specialized business degree.

Educating Yourself on the Business World

In order to put yourself in position to get the business degree, consider the following factors:

  • How much education is enough? – Many up-and-coming business entrepreneurs have to deal with the issue of rising education costs. As a result, they may be hesitant to put the time and money into getting a business degree. Money saved now might actually be money missed out on down the road. Having a business degree can open many more doors for you than if you just have a high school diploma and a few college courses under your belt.
  • Multiple uses for a business degree – While some obtained degrees limit the individual in their job search, a business degree is quite universal. From running your own business to getting a job in marketing and/or advertising to working for a retailer, a business degree can be very valuable when properly used. Having a business degree under your belt will more than likely catch the eye of prospective employers. Remember, the time and costs invested now in getting a degree from a business school can pay off in great dividends in your future;
  • Being connected – Studying and graduating with other business professionals can open up a number of doors for prospective business owners. While you may not be the one to immediately open up your own business upon graduation, others you went to school with may do just that. In turn, they may need help or even fellow investors to get the business off the ground. Given the fact many individuals strive for business degrees in today’s education world, this is yet another reason having that business degree can benefit you;
  • More options – As the Internet has evolved, so too has the world of education. In the event you feel like physically going to school is too much for you at this time, you have the option in many cases to get an online business degree. The benefit here is that you can earn your degree on your own time schedule, meaning you don’t have to spend the necessary hours commuting to and from school. An important factor no matter whether you attend school in person or online is making sure the program you choose is accredited.

With many economies still up in the air at the present time, reinforce your business profile by getting the right business degree sooner rather than later.
