Updates and News

SOBCon08 Logo50

We’re all looking at less than 6 weeks until we’ll be in Chicago. People from Scotland, England, France, Denmark, Mexico, Canada, and the US are coming — It’s hard not not be singing!

I thought I’d remind you of something I promised last October over on the SOBCon08 blog.

. . . you’ll have plenty of reasons you’ll be glad you made the investment to come.

Here are just 3 of them:

  • SOBCon Quality. We’re keeping the size intimate — quality time with quality people.
  • Actionable Ideas We’re pushing every topic from the Theory into Practice — solid plans tailored to your needs.
  • Interactive format We’re redefining the word conference even further — authentic experience working together.

The biggest reason, of course, is the people you’ll get to spend quality time talking with. Imagine who’s going to be on that one weekend together — talking business and blogging until 3 in the morning.

Some Housekeeping

Hotels are filling up and the room block releases soon. What does that mean? Well, it means two things:

  1. We’ve laid out funds to reserve rooms at a rate lower than the rack rate at the preferred hotels. Your chance to get that rate will likely disappear with the loss of the room block.
  2. Rooms that go unbooked, we’llhave to cover ourselves. It’s a risk we felt important to take so that none of you were left with no where to stay, but if you can book before April 1. You’ll be saying us an unnecessary expense.

Also we’ll need final numbers to commit to food and seating by April 11. So, even though, if you’re like me, we like to book at the last minute — my credit card likes that too — if there’s some way that you could register early or let us know that you plan to come, we can make sure that we don’t end up in a bind for great food.

Already our audience includes entrepreneurs, company bloggers, nonprofits, and some corporations. The folks at the Summit are so excited about the event that they’re extending an invitation to corporations who use their facilities. The Summit thinks that we have a lot to offer their patrons regarding about what we do.

And the Network Solutions folks are going to start taking appoints for in-depth blog consultations for 30 lucky attendees starting on April 1.

It’s going to be an exciting event!

Oh and don’t forget Chrisg’s contest with over $2000 worth of prizes sponsored by Chrisg and Blog Catalog!!! Make sure you sign up for Chris’ Authority Blogger newsletter to be eligible for the full prize and to see all the competition announcements.

Lot’s of reasons not to be an April Fool!! Can’t wait to see you in Chicago!

Great Find: Diigo

March 23, 2008 by Guest Author

A New Kind of Social Networking?
Guest Post by Phil Butler

Diingo

Diigo is one of my favorite startups of what we have termed “Web 2.0”. Whether Web 2.0 actually ever existed is irrelevant, for one thing it has brought us all is innovation for Web users – and plenty of it. A question I always ask myself and my readers is: “But does the innovation actually do anything for us?” I think I have tested and reviewed over 300 startups in the last couple of years, and I can honestly say that most of this innovation has been directed at entertainment or rather useless “cuteness”. Diigo is one innovation that does not fall into these categories. Diigo has continually adapted and developed into what is effectively the Web’s best research tool. Now, with their launch of Version 3, Diigo has refined a social annotation and collaboration service into an even more effective “personal and group oriented tool”.

The Vision

The Diigo platform was developed around a utility (the Diigo browser add on) that enables people to actually highlight and perform functions on sections of or whole Web pages. The vision was and is to help people grab relevant content and effectively aggregate, save and/or store this data. Diigo has transformed the bookmark into a more usable and effective data collection tool and has also enabled a very unique and positive community aspect with V3. Diigo basically enables people to study and research as one would in a library – by taking pertinent pieces of the knowledge puzzle and putting them where they are accessible, functional and more easily utilized.

Version 3 – Beyond Bookmarks, Way Beyond!

Diigo has been erroneously classified as a social bookmarking community by TechCrunch and others. Calling this deep and diverse research and annotation tool a bookmarking service is really ridiculous – akin to comparing putting a cardboard placeholder in a book with actually understanding what is in the book. Being able to grab, store, manipulate and organize data and knowledge and the abilty to work on it in collaboration has nothing to do with bookmarking. Judge for yourself, here are some of the features of Diigo’s Version 3 upgrade.

Diigo’s Personal, Collaborative Research Platform – This is the premise on which Diigo was built, a platform for gathering, using and sharing information. Not just any information, but highly filtered and relevant information beyond the weightiness of full Web pages and extraneous data. Diigo allows users to add, gather or extract from pages of information and then share or work with others to further refine knowledge. Users can define their content on a group, community and ultimatly on a personal level via this even more enhanced UI.

Social Content Site – The aggregate gathered annotated data on Diigo provides a collective repository quite unlike any other. Data becomes knowledge refined at Diigo because of the human filtering aspect inherent in the way people can “slice” or refine their annotations and bookmarks. Essentially everything gathered on to the Diigo platform becomes either a personal or communicative volume in the Diigo library. In this was Diigo content is perhaps more social than on any other site. Searchability and the host of Diigo user tools make endless the possibilities in utilizing this storehouse of information.

The Power of Suggestion

Version 3 has more than 100 refinements to help users more efficiently interact with knowledge and data. Perhaps the best of all these tools is the new sidebar that makes it simple to see your annotations, links, notes and even the suggested or similar data of other users. The sidebar interface is much more visible and interactive than even Diigo’s previous interface and light years ahead of the closest competitor. Combined with the Diigo toolbar makes Diigo an even more powerful collaborative tool. Users now have the ability to search and select suggested data from other users as well as suggesting relevant knowledge to their friends. Suggestion, when presented by like minded users, can effectively act as a knowledge filter which narrows search to a fine point. This is what Diigo can be best at, presenting relevant knowledge in a much more filtered and refined way.

I have succumbed to using bookmarking sites out of the necessity of networking needs myself. None of them have anywhere near the capacity Diigo has. Diigo is a complicated tool however, and new users will need to familiarize themsleves with the interface and tools there. However, this is the case with any powerful Web application, the difference is that Diigo can actually help you get something important done, while others simply help us play at doing important stuff. It is always a pleasure to work with such tools once we get used to them. It is my pleasure to be able to present just one of my favorite applications to Liz’s great readers. Liz has always been about putting people together in the most positive way, and innovations like Diigo aim towards people as well. Check this cool tool out when you get the chance and let us and Diigo know what you think.

Change the World: Joy!

March 23, 2008 by Liz

See the Joy of Learning!

changetheworld8

Ah, how we’re all waiting for spring time. I remember how I used to wait to break out my bike for that first bike ride. Even before the streets were quite clean and ready, I’d be watching for just enough sunshine.

For some reason, I needed the sun to fuel my feet so that I could push the pedals.

When it finally came I’d be off exploring, learning, becoming — filled with the joy of living. I start asking whether I could help the neighbor lady pull dandelions or whether sweeping her walk might be a good thing.

Even as a children, we seem to know that the best way to learn is to jump in and participate. And good things would always happen, when I gave a little to a cool project. Thing was that I had to go out to find them after a long winter hibernation.

The payments were good feelings, learning, smiles, and joy.

Joy is still a word well worth sharing. Go get some by giving some away.

We can change the world — just like that.

Wow! Raining Wildflowers!

March 22, 2008 by Liz

Stuck in the Weeds

What a week! Sick as a dog! Seriously. I lost the battle and became all about me. I was center of the universe and the universe was ALL WRONG!!

The sun when it shined hurt my eyes.
Folks weren’t responding — gee I wonder why?
I wanted someone to fix me.

It wasn’t the universe that was wrong — it was ME.

Yesterday, I had a conversation with myself about decisions and irresistibility. It went something like this,

Aren’t you the only sick person on the planet? Aren’t you the only one who has lots to get done? If you don’t like where you are, move your location; change your disposition; get out of the center of the universe.

So I did. I just decided that the universe and my friends are already supporting me more than I was noticing. I was so right about that. Heroes and angels were all around me — clients, sponsors, family, friends, folks who hardly knew me were suggesting how to lighten my load — They weren’t asking anything in return.

Once I got out of the weeds I could see that it had been raining wildflowers!!

Wildflowers

I saw their smiles. Each made me just a little bit better. Quickly those little bits added up to big bunches. I’m back in the world of living color.

Thank you to every wildflower I know.
