Connecting Dots

Connecting dots with The Idea Dude

Connecting Dots logo

Being asked to be a guest blogger for Liz Strauss is akin to being asked to be the opening act for The Rolling Stones. There’s an expectation to be “knock your socks off” great. Of course, this is all in my head, because Liz, in her sublime way, would say, “be yourself.”

It is inevitable that Liz and I would cross paths one day, we were both on similar quests… “to celebrate good blogs.” So this spot in particular is devoted to connecting the dots. Dots being blogs from Liz’s list and mine at TheGoodBlogs. Perhaps the best way to describe this is to show you. . . .

All blogs don’t start off as conversations, they start because something tugs at you enough to want to share. Blogs have made the Internet personal and it is the personal nature that brings me back to visit your blog again and again. Take Liz’s post about the word can’t for example, she made it personal because at the end, she says It seems to make me smaller. When you read that, you know something happened that day that may have seemed impossible but she found a way to overcome that sense of helplessness. It got me thinking of how impossibility would make me feel small too.

Being personal is infectious.

I headed over to Sean and he asked the question Can it be that all our choices are dominated by fear? So is can’t a reflection of reality or a reflection of our fear? Hmmm… Food for thought. Sean made his fear personal. He said, So I want to tell you a story. About me. Having followed his blog, I can tell you his entries that resonate the most with me are the ones that grab him in his gut so much he needs to share, the ones that stop him dead in his tracks and makes him think. It makes me think too.

My good friend, Ben, talks about whether bloggers always follow their own advice. His fear or concern? His blog may cease to be a mirror of him. He tells us, he doesn’t want to speak for the sake of speaking, to walk the walk and don’t just talk the talk. My interpretation is that it is really a reminder to himself to keep his terrific blog real and not post merely to feed the Google juice. Ben says his blog is a reminder to him of what he should be doing. In doing so, he becomes our mentor of what we should be doing too. Ben is being personal.

And sometimes being personal and sharing doesn’t have to have a lesson. Amy shared her Bad, Bad, Bad, Bad Day. It would be hard for any parent not to empathize with her. Wikipedia calls empathy a kind of emotional resonance… that’s deep. I concur. Judging from the comments to that post, Amy’s sharing resonated. I’m sure a few moms who read that felt a little better on Friday to know they weren’t alone.

Although none of the bloggers contrived to participate in a conversation, they succeeded in creating one in my head. Many of the bloggers above may or may not know each other…yet. But they were unknowingly bound together by their ideas, thoughts and emotions. They provided the dots. Liz gave me the crayon to connect them. The way I connected them was personal. It made me feel richer and some kind of wonderful.

Have an awesome week!

121: What Makes Your Heart Sing?

What Makes Your Heart Sing?

DAWUD MIRACLE asked me (and you),

What’s one, core thing that makes your heart sing? Could be anything. But something that really blows your heart wide open.

Aw, Dawud, that’s too easy . . . I love the view from outer space and from inside your computer.

All of my life I’ve been about people. There’s you, Chris, Sandy, Wendy, Lorelle who knows Chrisg, my essential man, Terry, Sean R., Jeff, a BawldGuy Talking, and so many more.

and how they learn. I’ve been teaching since I was ten. Put that together with love of relationships — connections in information and connections between people and you’re getting close to who I am.

Of course I love my family. I love music. I love dancing.

But I’m a saturation kind of a person. I dedicate myself to one thing. When I do something I don’t just pick it up. I don’t get just involved. I go on a quest. What makes my heart beat and gets my head focused is . . . is building things, playing with strategies and concepts, focusing visions, getting rid of the muck and showing folks how to unstuck and helping people chose their customers and attract them.

I especially love helping folks who aren’t sure what they should be doing.

It’s fun to help people discover where their passion lies. I guess it appeals to the a teacher in me. Just let me start with a question. Then I get to do go looking for relationships while I’m listening to another person talking — two of my favorite things.

I keep asking questions and in the words I hear folks describe the people and ideas that they would love to spend their waking hours with.

By the time I start mentioning what I’m observing, I’ve already got a big smile on my face. It’s so fun to say, “hey, did you hear that? It was beautiful what you just said. Did you notice how many times you’ve talked about . . .? You seem to be really into . . .?” And to hear back, “Oh yean, I guess I am.”

That’s when it gets just like two kids playing.

And they call this my work.

How could I not be jazzed!

I that that would be what makes my heart sing.

Everyone else, what makes YOUR heart sing?

And since this is a one2one conversation… to Dawud, (and you too)

What’s the the part of business, besidss relationships, that you look forward to doing more of?

If you’re reading this, I’d love to hear your answer too. –ME “Liz” Strauss

1 Conversation . . . 2 Blogs . . . 2 Directions

July 11, 2007 by Liz

one-2-one logo full

It started simply enough. Dawud and I talked about how to bridge our blogs with conversation. I would explain it. He would design it. Together we would work it out.

How cool is that?!!

We called it One-2-One . . . 1-2-1. It’s 1 conversation, in 2 directions.

If I was Dawud a great visual would be here. Imagine an arrow to Dawud’s blog and an arrow to you.

I write a question and send it to Dawud. The next day he posts his answer and ends with a question. . . . as he might in a conversation. That’s one direction.

While he answers, we can have our own conversation. That’s a second direction.

He’ll know my question when you do. I’ll know his answer when he posts it.
On his blog, the whole thing will work the same in reverse.

He and I won’t know beforehand “ no problem. . . . it’s conversation about

  • business
  • strategy
  • social networking
  • tangents.

Conversations are unpredictable. That’s what makes them fun.
All conversation is an experiment in finding what we know. Isn’t it?

Question Question Question

Here’s my question.

When I go to your blog I get the feeling there’s a back room behind your blog where you work. What work do you do there?

Find Dawud’s response tomorrow afternoon at DawudMiracle.com by the one-2-one logo.

Meanwhile, what kind of work do you do in the backroom of your blog?

Some Birthdays Are Special

July 11, 2007 by Liz

Chris’s Is

The date was December 7, 2006.

The headline at Successful-Blog that day read

Chris Cree and Liz Converse and Conspire

It was the morning after Chris and I had meet for the first time in person. We were announcing that he would be a writer on Succesful-Blog. That was before the world knew about SOBCon 07. That was before a slew of acts of magic, deeds of daring, loyal gestures, great writing, laughter, and sharing of himself and his Gorgeous wife.

I felt I knew him on December 7. Gosh, imagine how I must feel now. It’s way more than Americans have figured out a word. What word can come close to describing a guy who’s ALWAYS there for you? I think got it as right as I ever will when I used this quote.

People from the same family are rarely born under one roof.
–Richard Bach, Illusions

Family. Yeah. The family we would pick if we could.

So it’s with the gratitude my head and my heart that I say to my dear friend, Chris Cree.

I hold you high. I respect your work. I trust you with what is mine.

And I wish you the very most

Happy Birthday

Thank you. My life would have a Chris-sized hole if you ever left it.

The Blog Herald: Information Geek Meets Relationship Geek's Book

July 10, 2007 by Liz

Information Geek in Danger?

One of the most memorable moments of SOBCon07 was Jeff Brown’s statement about Kum-ba-ya-ers and business bloggers. No matter who hears me talk about that moment, if they were there, they remember it with a grin of “ain’t it the truth?” That’s because the famous Bawldguy, Jeff, was talking about the preferences folks have toward relationships or information as their personal strong suit.

So, when the time came to talk about the book by the consummate Relationship Geek, Phil Gerbyshak, I thought, perhaps, I was not the best choice. I found the right guy up in Edmonton. He’s Greg Balanko-Dickson, and he’s a self-professed Information Geek . . .

Blog Herald Stories: Pursue the Passion Takes Off

July 3, 2007 by Liz

Follow the Passion

Stop by the Blog Herald to read my interview with Brett Farmiloe and a review on his inspirational 2006 Pursue the Passion eBook.

The saying goes that when you want something, the universe conspires to help you achieve it. That has definitely been true for us as we have been getting an unbelievable amount of support for taking a risk and pursuing our passion.

The central reason we’ve had success in our pursuit is blogging. The power of blogging is something that most people don’t understand, and it was something I definitely didn’t understand it until three months ago when I started blogging on our site. Bloggers from all over the country soon found out about our trip and conspired to help us in any way they could.

Read Brett’s interview about the trip — which began yesterday — in today’s Blog Herald by clicking the logo.
