How Grandma Inspired a Geeky Amazon Gratitude Gift Guide

December 14, 2009 by Liz

Wishing, Buying, and Don’t Forget the Wine for a Cause

The Living Web

Every year, grandma gives me a list of holiday gifts to buy from my Amazon Affiliate Store. She wants a few pennies to come my way too. Thanks Grandma. I’m grateful for your thoughts.

Every year while I shop, I’m always distracted by thoughts of the people I wish I could be buying for. I see the laptop that one friend could use and that Kindle that one reader can’t quit talking about. My heart gets filled with gratitude for the folks who’ve made my life, my business, and my blog so lovely all year and I want to demonstrate in a very real way.

And after my unexpected hospital vacation this year, the feeling is huge.

Of course, it wouldn’t be wise, practical, or even possible to share the gratitude we all feel by buying everything we might. But the good thoughts of the giving are still awfully nice.

So here’s to dreaming of the recovery, the new clients and new jobs in 2010, or the new ideas we come up with venture and partner to raise each other up again. Here are the things I would love to get for my friends with my wishful big spend.

Maybe this list will give you some ideas and great thoughts of those closest to you.

Take a Peek and Wish

Of course the list starts with books and social media gifts, you can find lots of my favorites — including everything Twitter — at my Blogger and Social Media AStore.

I’ve tried to feature there all of the contributions by my incredible friends — if your Amazon products aren’t there, please email me so that I can include you. What fun to have a store filled will products by people I know and trust. I recommend those all to you.

And here are some other fun things I’d love to put in my “big spend.” Soon … maybe soon …

We’ll Be Together on the Holidays

Don’t tell Grandma, but she’s getting the book she wanted and another. I thought a movie and some snacks to share while watching might also be good. Meanwhile, I’m bringing over our favorite OneHopeWines … it’s always a good choice and a great cause.

Most of all, we’ll be together on the holidays. I hope you will too.

PS. If you get underwear and socks, before you return them … consider offering them to the nearest homeless shelter. Cold weather makes them a priceless gift.

Word of Mouth and Social Media Aren't the Same …

December 11, 2009 by Liz

But You Already Knew That!

relationships button

My son is an introvert. He thinks long before he talks and rarely wastes words. He’s not one to volunteer extraneous information. Ask a question and you’ll get exactly the answer it takes to fulfill your request. Some days that makes conversation a bit of a challenge. A digital native by age, birth, and technological era, he would never be a social media maven. It’s just not his personality or his inclination.

However, if you get him talking about something he believes in, he’ll tell you exactly why and how you should be participating. Then he’ll tell the person sitting next to you, if he thinks that person might listen. If he knows how to do something faster, make something easier, or has an insight into something more meaningful, he’ll share it because it feels good to do so.

That’s the definition of a word-of-mouth natural. It’s not promoting. It’s sharing what we care about with the people we care about.

World of Mouth and Social Media Aren’t the Same Thing

Recently, Andy Sernovitz and I were talking via email about his new SuperGenius Word of Mouth Conference on December 16th in Chicago. He made some great points worth sharing about the difference between social media and word-of-mouth marketing.

Social media is an incredible tool. But social media is not word of mouth marketing. It’s a tool we can use for the online portion of word of mouth. But it’s not even the main tool there. I would argue that more recommendations go by plain old-fashioned email than all the social networks combined.

On top of that, offline word of mouth is so much bigger than online word of mouth. A tweet still doesn’t beat a personal recommendation from a close friend.

So why are we talking about social media so much?

1. Because real word of mouth is hard. It requires big ideas, long-term commitment, and an honest dedication by a company to earn the respect and recommendation of its customers. You can’t just call your agency and order up some WOM.

2. Because social media gives us an action step. It’s fairly straightforward to do a campaign on Facebook or Twitter. You can call your agency and order up a social media campaign. And your agency, who is totally freaked out by this WOM stuff, can deliver a pretty good campaign. Then you can show the results to your happy boss. Everyone feels good and gets paid.

Except… we completely miss the point.

The point of word of mouth isn’t ecommerce; it isn’t to count clicks and CPAs.

The point of word of mouth is to be a brand worth talking about. To be a company that people are proud to tell their friends about. It’s to replace paid marketing with personal connections. To replace cash with love. To be fantastic.

And that’s what this conference is all about: A revival of TRUE WOM. A home for the simple idea that HAPPY CUSTOMERS ARE YOUR BEST ADVERTISERS.

True WOM is a movement.

Andy didn’t ask me to share what he said, but I agree with every point he made here and I wanted to pass it on.
He offered me a discount seat at the conference and he offered a scholarship code for my readers.

Andy wrote the book on Word of Mouth Marketing. No, I’m not an affiliate. I think it’s important that we know everything we can about getting folks to talk about the good things we have going on.

Using Cooliris … Here's How You Do It!! Part 2

December 10, 2009 by Liz

Brand New Today

Social business has left the world of broadcasting to enter the world of making customers into heroes and celebrities. Every chance we get to bring them together and allow them to shine, shines well on our business too.

Our customers are the fuel that lead our businesses to thrive. Why not give them some traction and support by letting the world know what they mean to our success?

One easy way to do that is choosing great tools from those the social web supplies.

As you might remember from two days ago, I started to make a Cooliris wall from some photos of my SOBCon09 heroes …

A typical use case to share rich media involves selecting content from Flickr. So I’m making a Flickr Set from SOBCon09. I’ve been playing with it to see how I might include some SOBCon09 heroes in my blog …

expresssharepage

Unfortunately I got stuck in the middle … with a static screenshot.

cooliris

I couldn’t find a way to fully integrate it yet.

Good Customer Service Still Happens

A few hours after I blogged about it, Matt from Cooliris called offering to help. We decided that it might be easier if he sent me directions that I could share with you.

To embed your cooliris wall in your blog post … start your journey at cooliris.com/express/builder and follow the instructions below.

  • Copy and paste the URL of your Flickr photostream (based on your blog post I think this is http://www.flickr.com/photos/14089532@N08/). You should see your Flickr albums and many photos in the wall.
  • To only display one album, click the “Filter by” drop down and select “A single set (album)”
  • Go to the appearance tab and customize your wall!
  • Go to the destination tab. Since you’re on a custom WordPress installation – copy and paste the embed code that shows up beneath the share options.

I did that and here’s the result!!

Thank you, Matt and cooliris! I appreciate your patience, your help, and your service!
You’ve converted my photos and converted me into a fan!!

What Cool People Can You Tell Me About Today?

December 9, 2009 by Liz

With social media and social networking everything changed.

66561_soccer_ball

Some say the playing field is leveled. I’m not so sure that’s the analogy. First of all it’s not a game. What’s happened is that everyone who has a voice has a chance to put their signal into the stream. Whether it’s a blog, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, or the smallest, most targeted social site you’ve ever seen, every business needs to seek out where our customers are and start talking with — not to — them.

Why? If we’re not talking to them, something else is happening …

  • maybe someone else is telling their version of YOUR story.
  • maybe folks are saying things you could be learning from.
  • maybe no one is saying anything about you at all.

How can we improve that situation? Certainly asking people to say nice things about us might be one way, but it’s not the best way to start.

Social networking is best when we learn, listen, and engage — telling great stories other people and businesses (not about ourselves). Find good things that great people and businesses are doing. Find people who are making strides doing things that relate to what you do. Help those doers tell their valuable stories. People will notice.

The best form of networking is telling folks about the great people you know and what they are doing. Sharing the news of cool people is a great way to show our own values.

What cool people can you tell me about today?

How to Deliver Yourself to Your Dream Everyday … in Small Amounts

December 7, 2009 by Liz

What Are You Doing

When I was young my dad used to say, “If you’re going to be a teacher, own the school.”

I’d explain that’s not how schools work — that schools provide a place to do what I want. I’d tell him about what I’d teach and how what kids would learn would change the world.

He said I had my dreams in the clouds.

1237681_moon-and-clouds

My dad proposed.

  • In our own ways we can make any place our own by filling them with ideas that turn into action.
  • It’s the action not the ideas that make the difference, the difference that wouldn’t happen without us alone.
  • People who do things build their future by delivering value that would be missed if they weren’t there..

Whether we work in the most obscure company, or work for ourselves at contract jobs. People notice value added contributions. People look for folks who offer them unique value.

Value added is an irresistible contribution and it brings surprising opportunities as a reward.

Don’t wait for your dream to deliver … deliver yourself to your dream everyday … in small amounts.
It’s easy to get where you’re dreaming by always showing up with your dream work. Every little value will bring you closer to that dream you’re after.

How do you add a little of yourself to what you deliver today?

Twitter, Are You Listening?

December 6, 2009 by Liz

Listening Well Involves Knowing What Was Said

I ended an interview today with this idea.

As everyone now can add to the conversation. People overvalue the power of talking. They think putting words out makes it easier to be heard, seen and found.

Yet as the signal rises, I find folks passing on things that they couldn’t have had time to read, answering questions that they’ve misread. Other folks are taking a listening posture, but they they’re just looking for what to say or pass on next.

I’ve started to think of that as Twitter FAIL … pretending to listen to Twitter friends.

Some folks have unfriended everyone and started over. Maybe they found it easier to block out most of it.

421497_portrait_ellen_03

Lots of folks don’t worry at all as long as they feel heard.

Still I think the stronger power lies in listening … with both heart and head. When we listen we learn.

Are you listening? How can I tell?
