A Story: New Media and the Writer/Blogger Girl

May 26, 2007 by Liz

Improbulus, I Don’t Know

bloggy tags small

The question was set. What is your diet of new media? What do you consume? Make a list if you would. Put the most consumed at the top of the list. . . .

Shortly before SOBCon, my friend Improbulus asked that question. I wanted to answer, but truthfully, I didn’t know what to say. Sad to say, my mind might be clever and occasionally a risk taker, but my reality is flat out boring.

I’m a dreamer. Like Christopher Columbus, I’ll go sailing off to the edge of the planet in the most rickety ships. (Okay, so maybe his ships were state of the art, but mine wouldn’t be — unless Terry Starbucker and Chris Cree made sure things were in order.) I’m a pizza and beer kind of girl. I still like my music on CDs, preferrably timeless, musical, and with great lyrics.

I’m not sure I know what new media is.

New Media and the Writer/Blogger Girl

This is the story of new media and the writer girl who became blogger girl. . . . It begins with knowing that, as writer girl, all I need s is a great keyboard, a fabulous display, and my BOSE headset that sends back sounds bouncing off walls — so that I don’t have to, bounce off walls, that is.

A telephone is useful, but optional. Well, this writer girl talks a lot, so maybe it should be on the list.

Life was simple in Web 1.0.

The world changed when I started blogging. [Read more…]

Happy Blogtipping New Year!

January 1, 2007 by Liz

Link Love for Making Us Smarter

blogtipping icon 1

Today I’m celebrating official Blogtipping Day. How about you? As the song goes “Give a little bit . . .” Here’s how it works.

  • Choose three bloggers you admire and link to them.
  • List three reasons why you admire each one.
  • Then add a tip at the end.

That’s all there is to it.

Improbulus

  • When I go to your blog, A Consuming Experience, I know that I’ll find deep content that’s unique and useful.
  • You test the tutorials and tools that you discover. I can trust that your review is what it says.
  • I don’t know what you do when you’re not blogging, but I’d like to suggest some software companies who could use your documentation skills.

Tip: Happy New Year! Are you best friends with your header? It might be fun to plan a new one for the new year. I would rewrite your description as bad poetry . . . Just kidding.

Lorelle VanFossen

  • It’s a favorite trip to visit Lorelle at WordPress. I’m always surprised and delighted at what I find there to get my brain going.
  • Lorrelle, you write posts about how folks get ideas, but you have so many. Every post has a new and interesting twist. I’m always amazed by them.
  • You know your stuff, but you translate so that nongeeky folks like me can understand what it’s about.

Tip: You’ve gotten so good at this . . . could you mess up once in a while?

Becky McCray

  • One visit to Small Biz Survival and I get my energy renewed and my spirit lifted.
  • Becky, your new design is an example of how a small biz can present itself and I applaud every one of your brag backet features!
  • Your ideas are fresh and yet, the’re imminently doable. They work in Oklahoma and the big city.

Tip: I might be missing it, but I don’t think you talk enough about ALL OF THE THINGS YOU DO SO WELL. I know you brag once in a while, but one conversation let me know that it’s so understated.

Thanks to all three of you for bringing positivity to the blogosphere. I’m smiling just to think of the contribution you make.

–Me “Liz” Strauss

Compendium from OpenLearn: FREE Mindmapping Software

December 7, 2006 by Liz

What’s on Your Mind Now?

Mindmapping, visually presenting the association of concepts and ideas, is a great way to get those racing thoughts from your head out where you can see them, organize them, and begin to work with them. It’s easy enough to do with a pencil and paper, but pencils and paper can be limiting. They require that you have an eraser and paper strong enough to stand up to changes you might make.

Mindmaps also have more formal uses. They make great visuals for explaining concepts. Within the structure of a single mindmap, such as this one (click to enlarge) —

— you can lay out a complex concept for a business presentation.

Until now, the problem has been that to use mindmapping in that fashion required expensive software.

Thanks to OpenLearn that’s changed! Turn the page to learn about Compendium — It’s FREE!
