As the co-producer of SOBCon, a small event conference, I had to invent a few things about working with sponsors. It took a while to build and explain the value proposition for an event that only offers 150 attendees. Yet, those weren’t just any 150 and my goal was to entice, encourage, and enlist the most awesome sponsors to invest in making it work.

Last week I wrote a blog post about the 6 Cold Truths of Building Business. Two points in that list really apply here. Take a minute to go read it if you haven’t had a chance to; then come back here.

Learning the art of finding great partners might be the biggest value of my business career. I’m delighted to be sharing what I’ve learned about finding great sponsors with you.

How to Enlist Awesome Sponsor Partners for Your Projects

How often does it happen that we get emails often from complete strangers, requesting our time, resources, or money that outline what our investment will do for person asking? For me at least, it happens more and more. It’s a sadly tuned request that only lays out the benefit to the person who is asking. No giver has resources to answer every one-sided request generously — it’s not good friendship or good business. How would the giver ever survive?

Whether you’re looking for a sponsor to send you to a conference or someone to support your newest project … you have to make it in the best interest of the people who might help.

Here’s how to entice, encourage, and enlist awesome sponsor partners for your project.

  1. Do your homework. Know what you have to offer. What about your event or project might be attractive to what sort of partner? Find out how folks value it. Be ready to walk in with an broadly sketched business plan that considers what the exchange of value will be.
  2. Choose your partners. Don’t ask everyone. Look at what you’re doing and find the ideal match for the event or project you’re building. It will be so much easier to connect and collaborate if you can explain to a potential partner how you already see them participating in a meaningful way.
  3. Start with asking them, “what are your goals for the next two quarters?” Then listen. Listening lets offers a chance to adapt what you’re doing to include something that fits the sponsor irresistibly.
  4. When you hear a goal that aligns with yours, suggest how you might be more efficient working together. Negotiation is aligning your project goals with the goals of the folks you want to buy in. Sit on the same side of the table and align what you want with where they want to go.
  5. Last word: Love your sponsors and the sponsors of any event or project that you enjoy! Sponsors make all of our lives easier.Talk about them. Write about them. Personally thank them for all they do for us! Give them lots of reasons to be pleased, proud, and ready to come back. You can bet that helps when we ask them to sponsor again!

A great example might be …
If you want a sponsor to send you to a social media (or SEO or education) conference or workshop, research to find a local business that wants to get involved social media. Ask for a meeting to discuss how you can help each other. You might suggest that they send you to the conference and that in return you spend 4 hours with their team teaching them what you learned.

Even if they don’t have the budget, you’ve made call on a local client who’s interested in social media (or SEO or education). You’ve started to establish yourself as an expert. You may find other business come from it.

Show how doing what you want will make them a hero, get them closer to their goals in ways that are easier, smarter, and more meaningful. Look for how you can make folks feel proud and smart to be a part of what you’re doing, you’ll find someone who wants to invest in what you’re doing.

The Story Behind the Story….of SOBCon

Let me tell you a story…

In May 2007, there was a gathering at a Chicago hotel.

75 people hung out together for a weekend, and talked about their craft, their passions, and their lives.

It turned out to be magical. Trust was high. Candor was abundant. Egos were checked at the door. There was a depth to the dialogue that prompted many to declare how “life changing” it was.

There were no barriers to learning. And it was good.

One year later, it happened again. The magic returned, this time for over 100 people in a downtown place that welcomed them with hospitality and great food. More lives were changed for the better.

Could it happen a third time? Yes. In May of 2009, 125 people felt it too.

The magic.

Where did this come from? Who was capable of conjuring up the ingredients of this potent mixture of trust, humility, and candor?

It had to be someone who lives and breathes these qualities. Who deeply believes in the basic generosity of the human spirit.

That’s where the magic comes from—that belief.

When that person entered the room at those three gatherings in Chicago, something wonderful happened. This person was the catalyst of a powerful enabling force that unlocked that same generous spirit from everyone there.

That’s really the “story behind the story” of this gathering we call SOBCon—the person who made it happen.

That person is Liz Strauss.

Without her these gatherings would not have taken place. No magic, no learning, and no life-altering experiences.

Liz Strauss IS SOBCon.

And she will once again be in a downtown Chicago room (yep, the one with the great food) with 150 people from April 30-May 2, 2010, nurturing and enabling this “think tank with a heart.”

The theme: “Virtual meets the concrete.” 2½ days of strategies and tactics focused on merging your online and offline worlds into a successful business.

WILF Comes to SOBCon

Howdy fellow SOBCon folks!

Hey, if you’re scratchin’ your head and wonderin’ what the heck WILF means – and what it has to do with SOBCon – well Bubba, wonder no more!

It stands for “What I Learned From…” and is a groupwrite project we run on the first Monday of every month over at Middle Zone Musings. Yup; every month!

In fact, since we started back in May of ’07, there have been 23 editions of WILF with a total of 650 entries to date! Pretty amazing, when you get right down to it.

As the name implies, the purpose of the WILF groupwrite project is to encourage folks to share something – anything – they learned from… well, whatever the topic that month happens to be. And, in doing so, they collect a link (and sometimes two) back to their blog. It’s that simple.

So what does that have to do with SOBCon? Well, for the month of May, the topic is (sound of drumroll) COMMUNITY – which happens to tie right in, don’cha think? So for the next project I’m extending a special invitation for all my fellow SOBCon’ers. (Is that a word? Who cares?) And, it’s not limited to those who will, y’know, actually be there. Nope; it’s a lot bigger than that!

In fact, this topic is for anyone who:

  • A) plans to be at SOBCon09,
  • B) has attended any previous SOBCon,
  • C) hasn’t made it yet but wishes they could one day,
  • D) never heard of SOBCon and accidentally stumbled across this post, or
  • E) has a cat who walked across the keyboard when you had the SOBCon website up on the screen. Or whatever.

(I think that about covers everyone, don’t you?)

So, no matter which letter of the alphabet you happen to, uh, B (sorry), you’re invited to join the fray and tell us what you learned!

Here’s how it works.

Write an article sharing something you learned, either from SOBCon, or because of it, or would like to have learned from it, or – hey, you get the idea, right? Length isn’t important –you can be as eloquent (or as brief) as you like. (Note: there’s only two rules: Be nice – and keep it “G-rated”)

Then, you post it on your blog sometime that week and email me the link at rhruzek [at] sbcglobal [dot] net. I’ll collect ‘em all, then post the entire list of entries at the Middle Zone. The list will then point everyone to YOUR brilliant blog! Plus, you’ll have a great compendium of lessons learned, to boot! I’m tellin’ ya; ya can’t beat that with a stick! (Well, I guess you could… but that would be, y’know, wrong!)

OK; mark your blogging calendars, folks, ‘cause the kickoff for this special WILF will be on Monday, May 7 (right after SOBCon weekend), and will be open for entries through Sunday, May 13. (But don’t worry if you’re late – I can always add your link to the list later.)

How Do You Exercise the Perspective You Need?

The theme of SOBCon09 is the ROI of Relationships. To underscore the importance of relationships in business and to have a chance to make and celebrate a few while we’re doing that, I’ve opened up this series by successful and outstanding bloggers like you.

Exercise the Perspective You Need by Karen Sampson

These days it seems like everyone is worried about their money, the economy, or any number of things. What’s wrong is always available for you to focus on and a little perspective may be all you need to stop turning your worries into monsters and start breaking them down into bits you can tackle.

What Perspective Really Means

In order to get real perspective wherever you seek it, the answer is always the same: take a step back. There’s no way to inspect the box you may have found yourself in if you are sitting in a corner inside it. Perspective means looking at your problem in a different way, but it doesn’t take 20 years to have hindsight. It’s funny, but we all need to be reminded of this from time to time. So much focus can lend itself to entrapment, even a few minutes away from whatever is troubling you can shed light on ways to deal with it.

Take a Deep Breath

It sounds cliché’ sure, but researchers have established that your breathing patterns affect your body chemistry. Ever notice how you are breathing when you are worked up about something or something is frustrating you? Chances are you’re breathing shallow ineffective breaths. This not only charges your body with tension but changes your state of mind. Your mind goes on alert and only sees answers in its immediate path. Slow down, take a breath and get away from the problem. While it may not be possible or practical to forget the problem for too long, even a tiny break will help you make the most of future time spent on the project.

Do You Really Need an Excuse to Exercise?

Sometimes perspective can mean talking to other people who have faced the same problem, but in other cases those alternatives simply aren’t available. Take a walk. This simple and relaxing alternative always lets your mind reset itself so that you can come at your problem from a different angle. Do you really need an excuse to exercise? Think of this one as a double duty alternative: you’re increasing your fitness while decreasing your stress load. Both important if problem solving is going to happen on the long term.

Setting Goals and Translating Them

Breaking your problem into a bunch of smaller chunks can be a great way to pick away at it. Is there a portion of your question that you can answer? Then let that tiny tidbit be your guide and break up the rest of what you don’t know. It may be that as a whole the problem seems insurmountable. Think of things in the past that you have already conquered that you felt this way about. Your psychology will play a huge role in how effectively you can deal with any given situation, and if you have a relaxed confident approach you’ll find anything is within your grasp.

The view will be blue as far as your mind’s eye can see.

Have You Tried Negotiating from the Same Side of the Table?

Monday, at a meeting at the Chicago Executive Summit, Louise asked how the SOBCon conference this year compared to last. She was surprised to hear that in this economy attendance and sponsorship are both tracking higher. We discussed what might be contributing factors:

  • an even more dynamic, high-value content offer
  • the increased interest in social media
  • the longevity of the conference
  • the return to such a fabulous venue — the city and the Summit facilities
  • and one other … more practice at partnering with sponsors.

Last year as I was putting together the sponsor kit for SOBCon08, I faced a marketer’s problem. How do you communicate the value proposition of a conference with a potential of 150 attendees to potential sponsors who would rather be reaching 150,000?

Knowing Where to Sit at the Table

In trying to find the correct sponsor value proposition, I considered the people who come to the conference. This isn’t a room of 150 “ones” — people who never met each other — but rather one 150 — people who are connected to each other. I thought I had it. I could even explain it.

If one evangelist can move a crowd, imagine what a swarm can do.

I’ve been wrong before. On it’s own the idea of a network of 150, didn’t carry much sway in the minds of sponsors who were looking for more concrete value.

I’d been offering a transaction for sale. I have this. This is why it’s of value. I pass the contract across the table. The magic didn’t happen until I metaphorically moved my chair to the other side of the table. It’s easier to make a deal when I sit beside the person I want to make a deal with.

“What are your goals for the next two quarters?”

“How can we configure a part of the conference to help you there? Would doing this work? Suppose we added an interaction like this one?”

From the same side of the table it’s easy find mutual goals and a path where doing business is natural.

This year, I built the conference with flexibility for sponsors goals inside their role as participants. I’m pleased and grateful that as a result I’m announcing that Colgate Palmolive and Metzger Associates have joined our sponsor team.
