Thanks Janice. Keep Going! We’re with You!

February 2, 2006 by Liz

Technorati logo

I sent an email to Janice Myint at Technorati just now. It said thank you for a great start–more movement in 5 minutes than happened in five months. It also said she has the voice of Successful Blog if she needs it.

STANDING OVATION FOR JANICE MYINT!

It’s obvious why they hired you at Technorati, Janice. You like customers–and now we like you too.
It’s a class act that brought you out here to the boondocks twice to reply to our posts. Thank you, Janice, for knowing what Customer Service is about.

Please don’t give up when things get really tough–because they’re going to–stuff up there is really messy. Know that you can hide out here, if you need to and that we’ll help you if we can.

–ME “Liz” Strauss.

PS Still dying to say something about how it took a woman . . . but I’m still the nice one, so I won’t . 🙂

Editing Comments in Blogger–What a Concept!

February 2, 2006 by Liz

If you use Blogger, which is after Word Press, the most used blogging platform, you might want to get to know Greasemonkey and Improbulus of a consuming experience logo. They know the ins and outs of Blogger and today I’m bringing you their solution to editing comments, rather than just deleting them. I know–what a concept!

1. Before you begin, you’ll need to get greasemonkey from mozdev.org.

Grease Monkey Upload

2. grease monkey is an extension for Firefox. If you’re not feeling lucky, Improbulus at Consuming Experience has a detailed article explaining how to install it.

3. Upload the greasemonkey script for editing comments.

4. Improbulus will show you how to use it.

It’s not nearly as complicated as it sounds, because Improbulus is clear and direct in giving detailed directions on how to do each part. So, if you’re a Blogger Blogger, give it a shot. You’ll be the only Blogger Blogger on the block who can fix your typos when you make a mistake in the comment box.

greasemonkey has a wealth of tools to help Blogger function with more up-to-date features, so once you get started, I think you’ll be sailing through the whole script catalogue. Other greasemonkey scripts include how to make a larger post editor, how to make a larger template editor, how to add a tag editor, how to keep current time, and how to blog by mobile phone among others.

Blogger Blogger what are you waiting for?

Janice Myint, It didn’t Work Right

February 1, 2006 by Liz

Technorati logo

I sent an email to Janice Myint at Technorati.

In it I included this link Dear Niall Kennedy and David Sifry and a statement that I have three blogs that are not working.

I awoke this morning to a reply it said.

> URL: http://lettingmebe.blogspot.com

That’s indexed fine:
http://technorati.com/search/%22people%20bother%20me%22

>
> Message:

I see last ping at 2006-01-22 18:15:13

forcing a manual respider works – can you check your pinging?

Here I go again.
It seems the drill is check the last post for the URL in the header and pick up one line in the message. No need to actually read it.

I did reply to the sender with a complete list of the problems, but I don’t think that was help enough, consdering the circumstanstances.

I think I also will trackback this post to Ms. Janice Myint’s original post about her arrival. The quest to help Technorati Customer Service improve moves forward.

It’s not an easy job, being the nice one. . . . But someone’s gotta do it.
Everyone so wants Janice to succeed.

Adsense Blog Says How to Blogmitize!

January 31, 2006 by Liz

Gooogle adsense logo

This via Darren at Problogger, who shares my taste in graphics. 🙂

Google’s popular Adsense Blog, which covers it’s advertising program, has a post that gives the how-to of key points of action when monetizing your blog.

    1. Choose the right ad format.
    2. Place ads where readers will notice them.
    3. Improve targeting.
    4. Customize ad colors.

Then the adsense folks leave the door open for you to email questions.

If you’re using Adsense already, it’s worth a look to review the basics. If you’re not, take a peek to see what it’s all about.

Success in a Blink and a Blink Test

January 31, 2006 by Liz

In 2005, Malcolm Gladwell’s bestselling book “Blink.” introduced the idea that we make make decisions about people and things almost instantaneously– long before we do the cognitive thinking about them.

Last week, Reuters reported that Canadian researchers have found that people make just such decisions about Internet sites, deciding in less than a blink whether they will stay or click away from them. Here’s a link to the article.

Reuters Screen Shot Article Link

I wonder what Reuters was thinking to write an article so short that you miss the whole thing if you blink?

A Blink Test

Before you blink away, you might try this the next time you bring up your blog or web page. Try to see your blog as if it were one you’d never seen it before.

  • 1. Close your eyes for a minute. Then open them once the page is up.
  • 2. Pay attention to where your eyes fall first. Is that where you want them to?
  • 3. Look at a blank wall or a blank piece of paper for a minute. Then look back again. What attracts or distracts you? Does anything make you want to stay or leave?

Use what you find out to make sure your blog gets a “yes” in that first blink.

THIS JUST IN:
Gary an SOB over at Blogoplex did a test on several blogs including this one . . . Click through to read his blink test results. See whether you agree.
