If He’s a Pulitzer Winner, Call Me a Citizen Journalist

April 22, 2006 by Liz

Busted

In every Greek Tragedy, the protagonist has a tragic flaw that causes his downfall. I don’t see a protagonist here. I see someone who never outgrew schoolyard.

Last night the LA Times suspended a Pulitzer Prize winner’s blog for something he did that any 7-year-child knows isn’t right.

His name is Michael Hiltzik, and he lied by pretending to be someone else.

He’s a journalist, and he lied in print. He wrote comments under pseudonyms–nice ones on his own blog and not so nice ones on blogs that had content that disagreed with the content on his. [Read more…]

Blogging Improves Job Prospects

April 21, 2006 by Liz

The Boston Globe Says So

On Apri 16, boston.com, the blog of the Boston Globe, ran a story called Blogs ‘essential to a good career’. It’s a paid subscription to the old paper’s archives so I’m going to summarize the argument — use it when you need to explain blogging as more than an online diary.

The main points of the blog post are that

  • blogging gets folks visibility
  • blogs update more often and so rank higher in search engines when employers Google candidates, which employers are doing
  • blogging forms connection with other bloggers much like networking
  • blogging shows a blogger starting conversations and interacting with others, which are positive traits that employers look for
  • blogging is the consummate home page, resume, and interview put together
  • blogging is an education–in order to blog on any subject daily a blogger gets to know it well
  • blogging opens up opportunities–blogging IS walking the walk–a blogger can pretend to know and so opportunities start to show up.
  • blogging offers a chance to add content to the Internet rather than always taking it away.

But then, if you’re a blogger, you already knew that. In fact, you probably don’t need this list at all.

Here is the link to PAY FOR What’s Obvious.

Just kidding, Boston Globe. I’m the nice one. Really I am. I was also careful to have the article in the other room while I wrote this summary down.

A Page for New Bloggers

April 20, 2006 by Liz

New Addition

Customer Think Logo

There’s a new addition to the Successful Blog family.

No, it’s not a little baby blog . . . it’s a new page in the sidebar called New Blogger page. I’ve cleverly named it that because it’s intended for those who are new to blogging. Tricky, don’t you think?

The new page has a short description of Successful Blog and links to the key posts and series bloggers getting started would want to access first.

The rest of you can feel safe. I didn’t name names about who misbehaves. I figured new bloggers will find that part out soon enough. . . . Possibly in the comments to this very post. 🙂

If you don’t know whether you’re a new blogger, please email me at lizsun2@gmail.com. I’ll do my best to help you figure it out.

Critical Skill 4: Part 1-Process Models

April 20, 2006 by Liz

Don’t Fear the Process

Finding Ideas Outside of the Box logo 2

I was at a company where the core competencies were the highest I’ve ever seen. In three seconds, we could strategize where to sit in a meeting to make it more productive. We could layout a trade booth to maximize traffic flow and product exposure, leaving room for fun and improvization. We knew where we stood in the market and against our past performance on a minute-by-minute basis. We ate the low-hanging fruit for breakfast, and shot down our competition at lunch. We were good.

This day there was an executive strategy meeting — like we needed one. As you might guess, there was a new guy in charge, and HE needed one. My usual Pollyanna attitude didn’t have room for this interruption. There was real work that needed to get done. I resented this pretend work that was getting in the way.

“If he asks us to spell strategy, I’m out of there,” I said to another VP on the way in. It was worse than I thought. He flipped a chart and started talking about SWOT — Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats — which, by the way, is analysis not strategy. We needed that even less. [Read more…]
