Catching Ideas Coming In and Going Out

October 4, 2006 by Liz

Everyone Has Endless Ideas

Finding Ideas Outside of the Box logo 2

Ideas.

Can’t write without one. I’ve tried. It doesn’t work.

If you’re reading this, you probably know that. So let’s move around that dead, old horse.

What’s an idea anyway? A thought, a stimuli, a catalyst.

Everyone has endless ideas in our brains every minute that we’re alive.

We can get to them two ways — from the inside or from the out.

5 + 1 Habits that Make Good Things Happen for You

September 7, 2006 by Liz

Make Things Happen

Some people say “It’s smart to be lucky.”

My favorite boss used to say, “I’d rather be lucky to be smart.”

I’ve always said, “You don’t need luck, if you can make good things happen.”

Everyone hears about someone who has all the luck. That person who is “in the right place at the right time — almost all of the darn time. How does that someone do that?

It’s not fate. It’s not an accident. It’s not even a lucky star.

That someone knows how to make good things happen.

It’s not hard — change some things and it could be you.

Bad Strategy Deserves Bad Poetry

April 10, 2006 by Liz

Bad Poetry Night on Successful Blog

If you’ve got some bring it over.

I’m watching more than one company do everything they can to tell their customer to go away. Too many companies leave today’s customer sitting alone, while they try to think up “strategies” that will bring them new ones.

S-T-R-A-T-E-G-I-Z-E

Finding Ideas Outside of the Box logo 2

They said the latest thing
and I came to realize
This company couldn’t strategize
They chased trends
like fireflies

Like kids loose in a candy store
they search every candy drawer
and shake every magic door
pinning hopes on that one big score

They’re on the corner preaching
to customers who don’t their need teaching

They see the world with tiny eyes
and let their wishes hypnotize
They can’t even spell strategize

No wonder they always talk about customers with fear.

Strategy in the hands of those who can’t spell it is even worse than a really bad poem.

One Degree Extra

April 6, 2006 by Liz

212 The Extra Degree Screenshot

At 211° water is hot.

At 212°, it boils.

With boiling water, comes steam.

Steam can power a locomotive.

The one extra degree makes the difference.

–Sam Parker and Mac Anderson, 212°, the extra degree, Simple Truths

One degree makes the difference. One degree that’s all–one degree. Are you willing to invest that extra degree in yourself, in business, in your brand?

Leaders, Tunnels, and Vision

Leaders and Tunnel Vision

Tunnel photo
When your thinking is stuck in a tunnel,

it’s the leader in you that finds a way out.

Seeing the tunnel and the light at the end of it

is what leaders recognize as opportunity.

Walking to the light invites others to follow.

What the leader called opportunity, others call vision.

Finding that Dream Company

March 2, 2006 by Liz

Black hole photo

I am often asked

by would-be entrepreneurs

seeking escape from life within

huge corporate structures,

“How do I build a small firm for myself?”

The answer seems obvious:

“Buy a very large one and just wait”

–Paul Ormerod, Why Most Things Fail: Evolution, Extinction and Economics
via Tom Peters

Did I hear a laugh of recognition?

Not all corporate structures are broken. Some have leaders and imagination.
